Read moreJust stopped by for my first time on my way back home on 29. Was planning on having french toast the next morning so I bought a french loaf and a honey wheat loaf. Right off the bat I was amazed at the price at $8 per loaf, but sometimes you gotta pay up for good bread! Then I got home and found out the undersized french loaf was clunky and heavy, not light and airy like its supposed to be. Then we started into the honey wheat, which is itself almost oversized. Not only does it smell and taste like cinnamon through and through which I find unappetizing for a sandwich bread, (Unless I had ordered cinnamon and raisin bread) but the middle of the bread is doughy and undercooked which I might have guessed based upon the pasty white crust. Just another example of a virginia Bakery that seems to do everything well but bread. Why don't these places start calling themselves cookie shops or pastry shops or maybe if the sandwiches are as good as all the reviews say perhaps a "deli" might be more fitting. Finally, I just noticed when I looked up the Google reviews that it seems like the owner is very diligent about responding to all of their friends that drop 5 stars, but seems to shy away from criticism. Weird! Want amazing bread Virginia? Every saturday morning Bread and Water from Alexandria comes to the warrenton farmers market in the parking lot off fourth street. That is artisan bread! I mean amazing! I didn't even complain a bit that their prices just increased. Get what u pay...
Read moreBeen coming here for years and have watched them steadily improve. The breakfast goodies are great all day. I like the brownies and occasional cinnamon roll, but they have less sugary items like muffins, scones and savannah bars. The berry muffins (lemon raspberry, blueberry) are just the right consistency, moist with plenty of berries.
If you need something hot, they have various breakfast sandwiches (made to order, not premade or reheated). Also, at least one time, try asking them to heat up a chocolate chip cookie.
At lunchtime, they have a lot of good sandwiches, it's easy to overlook the place as a lunch spot but they have the best chicken salad sandwich I've had anywhere, a solid steak and cheese, and good deli sandwiches like turkey and swiss, blt, etc. The bacon is always cooked perfectly.
The staff is super friendly, and they will listen to suggestions and feedback. For example, they didn't used to have bagels but after enough demand, they're now part of the menu. And they strengthened the iced coffee.
Only a few things keep them from being perfect: pre-covid they had indoor seating, now that's apparently gone for good. It was only a handful of tables but I did like the atmosphere. Also, a few of my favorites like the bagels are on an irregular schedule, and it'd be nice if they were always available.
I'm glad to have a spot like this in town, and appreciate that they aren't too "chain-like" and do a lot of...
