A mixed bag.
The burnt ends were phenomenal, as in "I could have simply stood at my kitchen counter eating them right out of the container instead of sitting at the table" phenomenal. (Okay, I have done that. Once.) Impeccably seasoned, crisp, delicious. If I lived in the area I'd stop in all the time just for these, but I'm about an hour away so it's a no-go except when I happen to pop into town. I think they also have burnt end tacos but I've yet to try them. The burnt ends are so good on their own, I almost couldn't bear to do it!
The pulled pork, on the other hand, tasted underseasoned and it was very fatty to the point of being unpleasant for quite a few mouthfuls. This wasn't the case on every visit, but it shouldn't happen at all. The pulled chicken wasn't fatty, but likewise, didn't have much taste. Both are fine if you get them in sandwiches or tacos, but they shouldn't need to be covered by fixings in order to impart decent flavor.
Brisket is usually good, but like with the pulled pork, sometimes it's too fatty. Ribs are delicious, but only available on Friday-Saturday, so plan accordingly!
The burritos I've tried are good, a bit pricey but I think they're big and filling enough to justify it, especially since it comes with nachos + queso and a drink.
The sampler combos are a great option and at a great deal! I've been told the samplers aren't available on Doordash/other delivery options which is a shame, because it's a solid deal for the price: options for 1-4 meats depending on which combo sampler you pick and it comes with 2 sides, with a roll, pickles, dry slaw and a drink.
The sauces are an unfortunate big miss and reading reviews, this seems to be a longstanding issue...
With the exception of the one that is mayo-based, these are very watery "sauces" that are not good for BBQ. I wouldn't even call them sauces. They have the consistency of a thin, watery marinade. Even the mayo-based sauce was just barely able to cling to the meat with a bit of thickness from the mayo.
Everything else was like dunking the BBQ meat into water. I poured an entire side of sauce on my pulled chicken and it ran off the meat, leaving only traces of flavor behind. It was so thin and watery that it didn't even absorb. Not what a BBQ sauce needs to do!
The flavors on all but the mayo sauce are muted, and for that reason it genuinely does taste like these are watered down. For cost purposes, maybe, to stretch them out? I don't know, but it's a shame, because you can get the idea of the flavors, but I don't want to pour this watery BBQ "sauce" over anything.
Overall, Jayell is mixed for me. I will continue to go for the burnt ends, the burritos, and some of the sides. But I think I will skip out on the pulled meats which are often under seasoned, and I always end up using a different BBQ sauce from my own collection because theirs are just...
Read moreJayell Smoke House catered our wedding on 6/28/2019. The wedding was just outside of the Lansing area. The wife and I, and our guests, were more than pleased with the food. Here was our menu:
Appetizer: Burnt Ends 3 Meats: Brisket, Pulled Pork, Mix of Spicy and Regular Sausage Sides: Cornbread Bake, Potato Salad and Baked Beans
We really liked how they pulled their smoker out to the wedding venue and cooked on the spot-it was a really nice touch for our barn-wedding and many of the guests commented about how they loved pulling up to the wedding and could see and smell dinner. While we were eating my wife's brother had no shame in mentioning that the cornbread bake was in his 'top 5 things' he's ever eaten. I completely agree!
We also felt that the value was quite reasonable. Weddings are expensive, and to be honest our dinner was one of the few things that I really felt was priced competitively. Working with the folks at Jayell's was really easy too-they were prompt with returning phone calls and when we went for initial tasting they were very low pressure. The food was so good that it did that talking all on it's own.
One of my favorite things was that the gentleman that catered the wedding held back a few servings of the appetizers for the head table, since we were busy taking pictures when everyone else got to enjoy them.
I 100% plan to make the trek to Romeo for some carry-out in the near future and would easily let them cater any...
Read moreIf I can give this place ZERO stars i would! MOST DISRESPECTFUL STAFF IVE EVER ENCOUNTERED!! Walked in and sat down, planning on ordering food, at the time, only ordered Drinks to start. When Drinks arrived, they were horrible, and for $10 Each Drink, not worth It!! PERIOD!!! As we waited for the Waitress to come back to the table, and even asked respectfully, if we can take the Beverages off the bill, kindly, we did not like them, as the Waitress replies, I will speak to the manager. When the manager comes to the table, she replies we normally do not take drinks off the Bill. I then state there is a misunderstanding, if we do not want them, why should we have to pay for them? Its not a big deal, to just void 2 drinks to appease a customer. She then goes to the Bar Tender, who is a Big Guy with a Long Beard and the Bar tender disrespectfully replies too bad, basically Its not being voided from the Bill, GET OUT as he is now yelling this from behind the bar. Way to go running a Business and treating customers like trash! I dont recommend anyone goes here! The most rude staff ever. Any normal person running a business, would have came to the customers table, introduced themselves, and said maybe i can get you something else, not yelling at customers from behind the Bar!! Goooood luck keeping this business running! NEVER...
