Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips is near the southern end of The Wharf DC. Our previous experience with a Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips was pre-pandemic in Las Vegas which we greatly enjoyed. We were excited for the opportunity to try the Fish & Chips again and curious to see if this Washington, DC location would be serving up fish & chips as good as the Las Vegas ones we remembered.
We dined here twice after relaxing at the Southwest Waterfront Park and walking over. On our first visit, we had some difficulty deciding what we wanted to order, but Chontell was at the register and patiently guided us through our ramblings to figure out what it was we really wanted. The signage shows the Fish Combo was $18.99, but we didn't think we would want three servings of fries for two adults and child, but we did know that we'd need three Fish Combo's worth of fish for the three of us. After explaining, Chontell knew exactly what we needed ("I got you.") and proposed one Fish Combo ($18.99) and two 3 Piece Fish a la carte ($14.99), which was exactly what we wanted. The Fish Combo came with two sauces and each of the 3 Piece Fish a la carte orders also came with two sauces, which was, again, perfect, as we each got to pick our favorite sauce and one to try.
The crust of the fish was so light and crispy it was borderline amazing. The fish itself was flaky and tasted of fish without it being "fishy". We tried the Gordon's Tartar Sauce, Cocktail Sauce, Curry & Mango, and Southwest Ranch sauces. They were all tasty and we each had our favorites (which we ordered again the following night when we returned). The fries were possibly better than the fish - with a thin crispy exterior and fluffy interior that stayed crispy and fluffy throughout the whole meal.
When I mentioned to Chontell that we loved the food and would likely return the following evening, she suggested we check out the newly opened Street Pizza north of the National Mall. I expressed that it was unlikely we'd make it there as we only had one day left in DC, but the following day we went to Street Pizza for lunch and had an absolutely delicious lunch of salad, wings, and a Margherita Pizza so good we tried to figure out how to go back and eat it again (we weren't able to because of time constraints). On our second visit to Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chip, we ordered the same meal again and found the fish and chips to be perfect once again. For our final dinner in DC, we weren't looking for anything fancy and just wanted some good food cooked well, and we were very happy that Gordon Ramsay lived up to our...
Read moreAs someone who is very picky with what and where we eat, we try to find only clean and respectable places with known chefs, regardless of the price. For new years eve, my husband and I decided to get a snack before heading out to a new years bash. I thought it would be nice to get some fish and chips on grubhub. We ordered 2 shrimp combos with an extra chicken strip and an extra shrimp. I ordered fries #2 for me and plain for him. Thats not what we got, that was the first issue. what we got was one shrimp combo, missing a shrimp and chicken strip with plain fries. the second one we got was a chicken combo/extra shrimp and chicken with #2fries, it was a kind of a mess. we go to this restaurant a lot and usually their presentation in person is a lot better. however, when it comes to take out, sloppiness is their focus. no attention to detail or even the order that was placed. so since we got the wrong order and i cant eat chicken because im allergic, i only ordered the extra strip on my order to give my husband, but that plan didnt go accordingly and according to what we paid for. So, i gave all the chicken to my husband and I got a few pieces of shrimp. So, as i bite into the first piece of shrimp, I was absolutely disgusted. I had bitten into a dirty shrimp with its digestive tract full of nasty sht. I have no words as to how this could happen again, not once but twice from your restaurant. The first time it happened was in your restaurant and the yound lady just exchanged my meal and gave me a fresh new combo and as a courtesy, gave me a refund. But, for this to happen again, im beyond words. beyonds words that this is how this restaurant, that strives for cleanliness and proper food preparations, i know because i record his cooking shows and own many of gordon ramsays books. Nothing ruins someones appetite like biting into a nasty dirty shrimp full with its digestive track. this is something i would expect at a lower class, chain restaurant, NOT at a gordon ramsay restaurant. This has left such a bad tatse in my mouth i doubt we will go back again, not to mention we had plans to go to hells kitchen as well. I asked my husband to cancel our reservation. I hope everyone that is part of the team for this restaurants sees this. This is unacceptable, on so many levels, for the restaurant and especially for...
Read moreMy expectations were pretty low and that was a good thing because it's pretty sad. I would love to see a "kitchen nightmares" where they change the name and send in one of Gordon's friends as a prank. This place would get ripped apart.
How is it: Slow. Nice that everything is mostly cooked to order (not sure about the "chips") but they tend to accumulate orders and then do a batch so you'll be sitting around for a while waiting. Low quality. Fish seemed ok, but the "chips" are basically Oreida frozen french fries and not cooked well. A basic air fryer and grocery store trip would yield better results. Too many of the "chips" had eyes in them so I'm guess this is bargain bin frozen fries. Tartar sauce was excellent. I got dirty #1 fries. Chorizo tasted like corned beef (concerning?) but the onions seemed fresh (they forgot everything else). Low value. It's relatively expensive even for it's location (next door is a burger joint that's $2-4 cheaper). The pieces of fish are small. Imagine a big fish stick. They're fresh at least but the oil isn't hot enough so the breading all falls off. "Chips" are pathetic. There was enough that I didn't finish them but that's also because I didn't want to. Poor accuracy. As others noted, they're probably going to mess your order up somehow. It was not busy when I went but somehow they still forgot the jalapenos on the dirty fries.
Bonus: When you pick up your order, they will take napkins and set them right on top of, and consequently in, the sauces . A+ move that guarantees the sauces, that they're already pretty stingy about, end up all over your hands, table, and anyplace else that touches the napkin.
Overall, if this didn't have a famous person's name attached, it'd have closed already. Even as is, I'd recommend going soon because sooner or later Gordon is going to realize how much of an embarrassment this place is and shut it down.
I went because I was bored and live near by. If you're a tourist with limited time to experience different places then this place should be...
