I read about this place on a DC blog that ranked the top 20 sandwich places to go and this one was #1. I couldn't agree more. I've been to this place twice and both times were amazing. It's one of those restaurants where after you take the first bite, you immediately say that you want to come back.
The first time I went I had the Turkey Stuffing Thing (actually called that) which consists of carved turkey breast, warm stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce on a french roll. This is a big sandwich and is delicious. I first had it at a local sandwich shop called Jetties which is slightly different but both are equally good. They give you a pickle on the side which is very crisp and tasty. The store also has a large selection of unique sodas and potato chips. The second time I went there, I got the #300 which is turkey, ham, swiss, Russian Dressing & Coleslaw which I choose to have on toasted marble rye bread. This was very fresh and tasty as well.
Prices here are about $7-9 for a sandwich so when you add on chips and a soda it comes out to be around $13 per person. It's a little expensive for a sandwich but the quality is what makes it worth the price of admission.
I've already been recommending this place to lots of people in DC and immediately take relatives or friends there...
Read moreI've eaten at Wagshal's, and like it. But I come for the meat! Wagshal's is surely the best butcher shop in town, headed by Pam Ginsburg, butcher extraordinaire. Everything is great here, but what stands out is the unusual, which is everyday for Pam. For example, I just bought fresh foie gras (how many places in town have that?) and talked to Pam about whether it should be dredged before being sauteed--of course, she's had it both ways, and could advise me. I also got some short ribs--supermarkets these days usually sell chuck as short ribs, and if you cook chuck as short ribs you won't get the flavor. The short ribs I got at Wagshal's were the best I've ever seen. Way better than Wegman's, for example, better than Harris Teeter, both places where I've bought them.
I also decided to bring home a prepared dinner while I was there. They had some great-looking veggie lasagna, and, warmed up with a little tomato sauce, it was a delicious dinner, alongside a salad and a vintage Chianti and a little candle light.
I think the prices are in line for top quality products.
Yes, it might not be convenient. I have to drive from Potomac, so I do it outside rush hour (for sure) but it's worth the trip.
I forgot to mention that they also have all sorts of interesting...
Read moreI've been coming here for a while now and I think I've finally decided that this place isn't very good. The pricing is egregious, the food is hit-or-miss and the people can be rude. If I come in the morning, I'll order the sausage and cheese on a biscuit. If its during the day, the Turkey stuffing thing. The biscuit is alright but its overpriced for $3.50, not to mention they charge you an extra $0.70 if you want cheese. I feel that's pretty deceptive considering, I would expect the price of cheese to be included, especially since it's described as a sausage AND cheese biscuit. Anyways, the Turkey thing is alright, more often than not, it's super dry. The pastries are disappointing as well, I dont know how someone messes up a cupcake or cannoli but, they manage to do so. The staff there are usually pretty nice but every now and then one of them acts rudely. Finally, on more than one occasion, my friends and I have noticed small mice scampering around the...
