I love Shirls and like many of us Waukeganites, I’ve been coming to Shirls since I was young. I don’t know if it’s the new staff, a lack of training or they just don’t care about their customer service anymore.

I stopped by on Saturday between 8-8:30 and there was no line inside nor in drive thru, but the red hair girl who took my order was super unprofessional. She told me to give her a minute, made me wait at least 5, which I didn’t really mind, but I heard her cursing and yelling over the speaker and when I pulled up to the window she had the WORST attitude, like if I was the one who made her mad. She was slamming the drive thru window, like she was mad she was at work or like if someone made her mad. She didn’t even smile or give me my total just put her hand out for payment. By the time I got my order, there was one customer inside and she slammed the window on last time and once again I heard her yell.

I get it no one wants to be at work on a Saturday night, but at least have some sort of manners. I’m all for giving the younger kids a chance and a job to make some money, but good customer service is...

I do a lot of Doordash and get runs from here daily. Don't think that because they have a drive-thru it will be fast. I have never waited less than 30 waiting in line just to get to the window and that one time was for 2 shakes that took another 25 minutes to make for reasons I can't grasp. When you think you will be able to pay and grab your food. They haven't even started your order. Doesn't mater if you have doordash, if you call ahead, walk-in, anything. There will usually be 7 or 8 kids "working" but I have no idea why because more often than not they are standing around playing on their phones and if. Don't ever plan on getting through this place in less than an hour. I have had to just declining Doordashes to think place because you can do 3 or more runs in the time it takes the kids to get your order started. The kicker to the whole thing is the food is nothing special. It's not terrible (usually) but it is not worth the hassle at all. Avoid this place until they teach the kids how to work and cook and do what they should be doing. Please...

I was in town visiting my parents and had a craving for some childhood favorites; a cheese grub and a turtle polar blast.

The cheese grub was super squished up by the time I was able to eat it, and lacked much seasoning. The polar blast had no chocolate shell or layers of any kind in it which leads me to believe nobody has been trained properly here.

It was the Saturday evening dinner rush and the place was super backed up, but the employees I could see behind the counter didn't seem to have any sense of urgency. Also I watched one of the girls put together a banana split without any gloves on and she had some super unsanitary long and bejeweled nails which she used to touch everything from her face to her hair to the register and her cell phone back to more food. Yum! No gloves. Real cool in a pandemic world.

Dear Shirl's I know finding employees is hard but please get them to wear gloves when...

The staff inside had made a mistake on my order and we were eating out of the bag of fries and put our hands on the mozzarella sticks not realizing we got the wrong food. I went in to ask about our missing Mac and cheese bites, and the girls at the counter took my food and handed it back to the kitchen. I asked her if they had a manager on staff and she said he's mini golfing next door. I'm not sure what else they're doing when the managers aren't around and I did inform her that we touched that food when she handed it back to the cook. I wonder if it's going to go to someone else's order now :(

I ordered a plain ham and cheese SUB sandwich and received this…this is NOT a sub sandwich, I could have made this at home. The cheese sticks are good though Edit because I can’t respond to the owner: Subs were listed on the menu in the drivethrough I went through, so if they aren’t available they shouldn’t be listed, that’s false advertising. However since you say it’s owned by different people than you I understand it’s not your personal fault, but maybe you ahould reach out and let them know they shouldnt have subs listed if they don’t sell sub sandwiches

Restaurants like these are usually known for having great classics like chili cheese dogs and chili cheese fries. But there was no chili, just ground beef with cheese on top. The chili + cheese flavor palette is an iconic staple, but the meal I got from here was just sad. The hotdogs are low quality - they felt really rubbery and tough to chew, it felt as though my food was fake and I started to feel really disgusted by it. Detroit's Coney Islands should be the ideal model if they're looking for quality because this wasn't it.
