I'd noticed a few signs in recent days at the nearby Dunkin for National Donut Day, so I was emotionally prepared for this exciting holiday yesterday. This seemed like the edgiest donut option within 20 minutes of me (Dunkin is so ubiquitous in society now that it's not much of an event), so I decided to stop by at lunchtime. That was obviously a risk, as it's obviously not the ideal time of day to get a fresh donut AND it was a donut-related holiday. I live on the edge.
Glaze is located in a sprawling and oddly designed strip mall. From what I could tell, it was basically two separate strip malls with a supermarket dividing them, and tons of one-way lanes. Utter North Jersey chaos. Of course I went to the entrance on the complete opposite side, which meant it took an extra five minutes of letting eager-beaver TJ Maxx and CVS customers walk in front of my car. If there's an easier way to get to Glaze, I would recommend doing it - it's right off a busy intersection where Bloomfield and Passaic meet, so good luck.
It wasn't a disaster when I walked in, but it was also clear that Glaze had been busy. The inventory was depleted and one employee was just finishing her shift and looked like she was on her way to take a nap, which, fair. (As an aside, she had a very pleasant, short conversation with the remaining employee behind the counter that was nice to see - they clearly get along and respect each other. Lots of good vibes). I'd taken a look at the menu beforehand, which had quite a few intriguing options. The one I'd had my heart set on was the maple/bacon, but unfortunately, other National Donut Day celebrants had gotten them first. I settled for my second option, which was the Twix Donut.
It was definitely a tasty treat. Understandably, it's on the cakier side, which I'm usually pretty ambivalent about (ideally I like an airier donut), but this one hit the spot. It was a little messy with the caramel, but I think you know what you're getting into when you order a donut with a ton of sticky shizzle on top. The price point was maybe a little high - also, not clear what if anything Glaze actually did for National Donut Day in terms of specials/discounts other than to simply promote the holiday with its signage, but no matter - and came out to $4.20 or so. I don't recall what the price was for a donut the last time I was at Dunkin, but I'd guess this is twice that. You're getting a bigger, more sophisticated donut though, so I don't know that it's that egregious. The young woman behind the counter was very pleasant and confirmed that it had been a crazy donut holiday at the donut store. I'm lucky they even had my second option.
I can't have donuts on a daily basis anymore even as rock and roll as I am, but this was a nice way to wrap up the week. The location leaves a little to be desired and I'm sure the product is a little fresher earlier in the day, but all of...
Read moreAfter leaving New York due to Covid my girlfriend and I were devoid of all our favorite restaurants & treats for months. However, a while ago we discovered this joint on Seamless and WOW was it an unexpected gem. Glaze Doughnuts is one of the tastiest purveyors of baked goods I’ve ever sampled in my life, and rivals any shop, bakery, chain restaurant or street fair Manhattan has ever produced.
My thanks go out to the truly talented staff of pastry chefs / bakers and shop workers who have kept this place not only running successfully in an unprecedented pandemic, but have somehow even been improving under the circumstances. Since I became a patron I’ve noticed a change in several recipes (having long since tried their entire lineup), and it is so rare these days that something good changes and it turns out to be massively for the better. A serious shout out as well to the manager, a newer addition to the store and a blatantly hard working dude who has been working with the team to make a lot of changes that I as a customer and permanent fan take notice of.
If you only try one new treat, dessert, cheat day breakfast or sugar craving in the near future then let it be Glaze Doughnuts. There are few things I look forward to as much these days as when I’ve placed an order of a 1/2 dozen of their finest and watch the car make its way across the tracker map. Oh, and if you’d like a few suggestions I’d definitely say to try the Ferrero Rocher / Nutella, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cannoli, Submarine and by FAR my favorite the...
Read moreIf you want a GOOD doughnut, go to Glaze Donuts. Seriously, we're from the Washington Metropolitan area and good doughnuts were easy to find. When we moved here, I cried because I couldn't find them, or at least, I didn't know where to look. DDs is on every block, and my taste buds were screaming... No! :( It took us a minute to find Glaze! :). However, I was told that they discontinued their "Sour Cream Donuts." REALLY! My heart is crushed! The reason given... "it wasn't selling." REALLY! That doughnut was GOOD! Fire the person that does your marketing! Oh, they're related to you! Sorry! Glaze should take a survey, and this is how it can be done. First, create a poster, for marketing purposes, with the title "Is it a Keeper?" or "Should it Stay?" and sale sour cream doughnuts for two days, during you busy times. Second, establish a counting system that's easy, possibly using those colored tabs we use for book marks, and on the poster, which is accessible, have a section for Yes - keep it, and another section for No - It's got to Go! and have green tabs for yes and red tabs for no. Customer would place the color tabs on the poster under the Yes or No section. Then at the end of the two days take your count... play fare! Then create a two more posters, one saying" Sour Cream has a Permanent Home at Glaze Donuts!" or "Sour Cream is Gone for Good! Sorry!" I say give it a try, what...
