My husband and I made the drive all the way from Ames, IA (a +40min drive) to visit this buffet after hearing good things about it. Sadly, our experience left us deeply disappointed and frustrated.
Initially, everything seemed promising. The greeters, Vivian and her coworker, were fantastic—professional, welcoming, and eager to answer our questions about pricing and dish selection. Their customer service was a highlight of the visit and gave us high hopes for the rest of the meal.
The buffet has a rule that any excess food left on your plate will be charged at $6.99/lb, so I started with just one plate to avoid waste. After eating, I decided to take a short pause before getting more food, as I didn’t want to rush and risk indigestion. My husband, meanwhile, had two plates and was finishing his second when we were completely blindsided.
Out of nowhere, our server brought us the check—without asking if we were finished. We hadn’t even had dessert or shown any indication that we were done eating. To make matters worse, we hadn’t even been there for a full 35 minutes! The assumption and abruptness were astonishing. In all my years of dining out, especially in Iowa, I have never experienced anything like this.
Both my husband and I were so shocked and confused by this treatment that we didn’t even know how to respond. It felt as though we were being rushed out, and for no apparent reason. What should have been a pleasant meal quickly turned into a disheartening and disappointing experience.
The food itself wasn’t anything extra special—good, but not great. The main draw seems to be the large variety of dishes available, which would be a strong selling point IF customers were allowed to enjoy their meal without feeling pressured to leave shortly after arriving 🙃.
Unfortunately, this experience completely soured our opinion of this buffet. While the initial service from Vivian was commendable, the treatment we received from the server left such a negative impression that we are unlikely to return.
If you’re lucky enough not to get rushed out before finishing your meal, you might enjoy your visit here. However, based on our experience, I can’t confidently...
Read moreMy mom wanted to come here for the soups they offer we go in get greeted, Same place since it was built nothing new same nasty cheese smell, people coughing and hacking, tables sticky I personally don’t like it here because I had a horrible experience along time ago always check your drinks swirl it around because there was trash in mine (used napkin) but before that I noticed a server looking at my drink and she tried to take it away from me before I even looked but I looked and that’s where I saw it she brought me another one shortly after, I had lost my appetite and we never came back until today. My mom was in line to get her food cooked I was waiting to get the #1 soup it was decent a lil cold a lil salty so it was ok I still finished it. After me and my mom finished we ate from the buffet I got some noodles rice and chicken the noodles weren’t bad the chicken was hard as a rock and honestly I didn’t even finish my plate the food was ehh. Right after that we waited and waited for a server to come and ask if we wanted another drink and nothing I tried to look for someone but no one was there. A couple of minutes later someone comes by she gets us another drink and leaves, At this point we already wanted to leave and again where is our server to be found we don’t know I ended up waiving to her and in hopes of her understanding me of what I wanted she actually did but when we were going to pay she waited there with her nasty rag waiting for us to leave her a huge tip. Absolutely not she didn’t deserve anything she literally only came once we weren’t going to leave her anything and honestly we usually tip pretty good! On the service/food and how the waiter treats us, right after we got up she literally said I kid you not “One dollar??” Yes Ma’am and I think she gave us a dirty look but we never looked back and left. Honestly awful experience especially from the waiter demanding a good tip..never again don’t waste...
Read moreI went in today with a group of 11 to celebrate Mother’s Day. With a group being that big, we thought it would be best/easier to go to a buffet. We chose Hibachi Grill & Buffet because we had been there multiple times prior to covid and we enjoyed it. The food was fine; everybody found something that they could eat... the service, though, was terrible. I have never had an experience like this there, or honestly, at any place. I was a server myself and everywhere I go, I leave a good tip (25%+) and I am always easy on servers because I know how difficult it is to be on your feet all day and catering to people even when you’re not in the mood. I was appalled by our server today and so was my family. He gave us the ticket, he ran the card and came back to hand it to us and just stood there. Normally, it’s common courtesy for the server to briefly walk away and come back for the signed check at any restaurant (buffet or not) that you go to. You don’t just stand there and hurry people up. Especially when there is a group of 11, 1 person is paying for it and the entire group has to figure out who is leaving what for the tip. My mom, who paid for the entire group of 11, ($130 something) left a $5 tip on her end. The waiter stood there, already rushing her to sign for the check, looked at the $5 bill and said, verbatim: “Wow, a big table and only $5?” It was incredibly rude. Terrible. We were all planning on leaving some cash for his tip. There were people still eating at the table. My mom rushed to her wallet to give him a $10 bill on top of the $5 tip. Again, it was incredibly rude and distasteful, he was impatient and it was just disrespectful. I won’t be returning and will be advising my entire family/friends to avoid this place. I wish I could give this place zero stars. That man single-handedly ruined this...
