Super, super, super friendly/professional family-like staff that make you feel like you've been coming here for years! Very good food overall.
W. Jefferson is currently a sorta hidden gem that may one day rival nearby Boone as a tourist destination. The local Mt. Jefferson state park has one of the most jaw-dropping sunset views in the state and it takes only 5min driving to reach the top from downtown! Downtown West Jefferson (which is very different from downtown "Jefferson" a couple miles away) has been remodeled and now has a bustling main street with lots of great restaurants, bars, shopping, etc. It's got a very cool vibe.
Among the best of those restaurants is Black Jack's, a local family owned business with roots here (it's still owned by the same family that established it decades ago). We've been only twice and we had similar impressions both times.
The service is some of the best we've ever had. Every server there is super friendly, helpful, professional, and make you truly feel like you're "at home" and the servers seem so happy with their job, they give off a sorta family-like energy. The inside has a laid-back environment with good music and decoration, plus they have a half-dozen tables outside. In our opinion, on good weather days, the outside is where it's at because Black Jack's sits right in the middle of W. Jefferson's action and not all restaurants offer outdoor seating.
The food, in general, is very good. I'm not sure I myself would say they have "the best" burgers in the state, or even in the city, but the burgers are really good as are most of the other menu items. The lamb gyro is great and so is the marinara meatball sub. It's kinda hard to go wrong with anything on the menu and while we haven't tried any other restaurants in the city, I feel they likely do have some of the best food in town. At least, I can't imagine anyone having something there that it's tasty and the owner runs a very good/professional establishment - replying to almost every comment, responsibility fixing any problems that may arise, and it's obvious in my opinion that management is really on top of everything that happens there.
Overall, if you choose to eat here, you can expect top-notch, uber-friendly service, delicious food, a very comfortable atmosphere, and reasonable prices. This is not just "a restaurant" - it's a special spot with a deep connection and history to the town. Totally...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIt has come to my attention that while healing from a horribly broken clavicle out of town, one of my favorite establishments I visited, getting the same delicious Grilled Chicken sandwich w/lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise, had changed ownership. On top of my love for this sandwich, they had the buy 10 get one free deal. This little gem of marketing worked great on me as I was always working towards the free one. I felt confident enough to move back to Ashe In the last days of March, and Black Jacks was the first thing that popped in my head thinking what to eat while out. The perfect slightly golden level of cooked chicken breast. The oozing hot goodness on the perfect sized, toasted bun of brioche I believe(?) topped with my favorites. Impatiently I called in an order just as I had so many times before. I noticed, as I walked in to wait for my lovely delicious to be ready, things seemed more dark(physically) and much less inviting with an āon edgeā atmosphere. I sat at the bar thinking I might get a drink while waiting. No one was attending me as I sat at the bar without any ābe with you shortly or anything. No one was wanting to speak with me it seemed. I understand everyone has a bad day but this was happening with everyone I saw there. After close to 11 minutes the bartenders asked me what I wanted. Iād lost my thirst and comfortability, so I told her Iād ordered the Chicken Sandwich. She seemed confused and even put off a little. After a lot of pots and utensils banging around in the kitchen, she came out with a āto goā box and a sandwich. I have multiple friends working in the service industry and understand the necessity of tipping and always do. Black Jacks I usually tip over 35% on my to go order. This isnāt even expected. No Iām not rich. Quite the opposite. Either way, on a 12.95 chicken sandwich to go l, I payed 22$. Trusting everything, I didnāt check my box , which did seem off balance and light. Once Almost home and I opened it, someone had thrown two old soggy buns and a blackened hard old hamburger slog with what looked like used to be a piece of lettuce that was pulled out of the mop water bucket. I must say, whatever is going on there has me mourning the loss of a fine establishment. Finally, I saw no indication the 10 reciepts/free sandwich deal was still going. No longer is there a reason for me to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWow, this place was pretty bad. My husband begged me to go because he heard they have great burgers. He said his was fine, but when a burger and fries is over $15, it better be better than just fine. But the worst was my experience. When we entered, I directly asked one of the employees if their chicken tenders were "hand-breaded," to which she assured me they were. I then ordered the chicken tender sandwich, which is on the menu. The waitress asked multiple times "crispy or grilled?" and I reiterated each time that I wanted the chicken tender sandwich. When it came out, I got a disgusting-looking patty that looked worse than something I could get at Burger King and it definitely wasn't hand-breaded or even tenders. I sent it back, thinking I would get a hand-breaded chicken tender sandwich. But the waitress apparently didn't believe me that a tender sandwich was on the menu and checked the menu in front of me to confirm.
After my husband was completely done with his food, mine finally came out and the tenders were not hand-breaded; they were clearly frozen from a bag and quite frankly cafeteria-looking. I told the waitress it wasn't her fault, but we would not have chosen to eat there had I known and let her know a different employee told us they had hand-breaded tenders. Our waitress then came back and asked if I was "sure" I asked if they were hand-breaded. Listen, they're all I eat at a place like that. I certainly was clear in what I asked. Perhaps if your music wasn't blaring as loudly as possible, you would hear what your customers are asking!
The sweet potato fries were good, but as a breastfeeding mother who needs protein, I was very annoyed, especially at how they responded when they made multiple mistakes with my order.
Additionally, your food needs to be pretty good if you charge over $10 for a burger and the included side with no upcharge is a lazy bag of Lays...
