This Wawa has been decent in the past, and ive met some great workers here. But my last visit will be my final one because of the racism I've experienced.
At 4pm I went in to buy drinks for an event, only to be racially profiled by the Indian manager and his scruffy, bearded sidekick at the entrance counter during my whole visit.
While i was shopping The manager shadowed me under the guise of working, while his colleague's eyes tracked me like a hawk. As i got to the self checkout, and a couple of items have already been scanned, i realized i forgot to grab chips, which is on a shelf by the door. When I went to grab an item near the entrance, the manager yelled, "No! No! Get him!" assuming I planned to steal simply because I walked past the door with some of my items.
I had a Wawa bag on me while shopping, clearly visible and folded up empty. If I intended to steal as they claimed, why would I leave my bag unfolded the whole time and other items at the counter? Am i going to carry 2 cases of soda and 8 other things right past them? Despite this, the manager aggressively ushered me to the checkout and scanned my items with undue haste, while his partner continued to scrutinize me. Their behavior reeked of racist intent, so I decided not to give them my business.
I used a card I knew would decline and told the manager to cancel the order. He repeatedly emphasized, "I'll put it back, you can go." as if that wasn't his job. Why the need to state the obvious? And what does he mean "I can go? Was I obligated to be in the store?
So already being convinced that the both of them had an issue with black customers, I conducted a little experiment. I picked up an 89-cent bottle of water and slowly walked to the self-checkout. Predictably, Mr. "Hurry up and buy" swooped in, trying to steer me towards the staffed checkout.
Despite my insistence on using the self-checkout for 1 item so that he can get back to his "work" he wouldn't back down and it made me extremely uncomfortable, especially given that i was the only black customer in the store. I finally told him I wasn’t stealing and didn’t need his help. Only then did he relent as a result of being called out but both he and his colleague continued to eye me suspiciously.
At the door, the cashier hesitated asking to see my receipt, because its a practice I’ve never encountered at any Wawa, and one that doesnt exist. With the manager still glaring from afar, I asked if he wanted to check my receipt himself or my pockets or my Wawa bag. Suddenly, they played dumb, acting like they hadn't just treated me like a criminal the entire time.
I have a tender love for Wawa, it was my first job, i come every day for breakfast and lunch, and i met some amazing people at wawas who im friends with even. However, I won't ever tolerate any racial profiling and ignorance from any business. These two employees should be ashamed of themselves for targeting a loyal black customer out of...
Read moreThe cashiers need to stop talkin too long and line are holding up people by talking to their friends and neighbors for a long. Of time the manager of the store should not permit this this is time-consuming they should keep their conversations to people that they know coming through their line to a minimum this is happening quite a bit and it really is irritating at just started happening with this year so who is the management of this establishment the cashier talks to people for at least 10 minutes and holds people up in the line people that want to make a pit stop and get in and get out it's impossible for them to do that because of the cashiers moving too slow or talking to people that they know too long these people need to get their act together it's okay to knowledge to someone that you know but they're talking to the people too long and tempers are flaring people have a line that have something to do other than stand in line and wait for cashier finish that conversation that personal time on...
Read moreTonight I visited your store at norristown as I was pretty hungry and came down to grab a sandwich! Upon receiving the sandwich I asked your employee “Joanna” to melt the cheese on the sandwich if possible. On hearing this she started to abuse me and “Threw” the sandwich right into the trash right away in front of me which was pretty unexpected for me! I expected her to either say if it wasn’t possible or she could’ve taken the chicken patty and heated it up for couple minutes to just melt the cheese! But she choose to throw the sandwich in the trash apart from anything mentioned above! This was really disgusting. I would ask you to train your employee on Atleast how to respect food! I could see she wouldn’t treat the customers in a better way even after training but Atleast she have to be trained on how to treat food for which we work our A** off everyday only to eat that food. This is one of the worst experience I’ve ever...
