Ok so let me start by saying the food was excellent. I had 2 Cakes 2 Eggs and meat, somewhat uncharacteristic of myself. I usually go for a fancy house platter or some specialty but today was different. The bacon was oh so good and the cakes fluffy with strawberries. Now why 2 star we had a group of 4 and we ordered at the counter and found a table and waited ..... and waited ..... and waited ..... and waited some more. My impatience was settling in I was super confused cause the restaurant wasn't that full and the table behind us was receiving their food. Wait ..... Wait.... Wait some more and finally the lady serving the other table says "are you guys still waiting?" Rushes to the back and about 5 min later comes back ..... with the wrong order!!! Mom was missing her mushrooms on her omelette, my brother and I didn't have strawberries on our cakes and my wife ..... her French toast was perfect can't mess that up I guess. So mom eats her omelette without shrooms and we get our strawberries cause duh can't have cakes without berries...... whatever! Once the dust settled our first bites were just enough to forget how long it took to get our food. The bacon melted in your mouth, the berries were very favorable, and the mt dew stung your cheeks. I'd give a 2.5 but I can't since we were upset the food took so long we really couldn't sit and enjoy what we bought making the meal taste you know mahhh. I always change my reviews if the next experience is better but it's 11:00 am and we got there at 9:10. I own a business myself and know how important it is to have good reviews as well as a Sterling reputation. I also realize that times get busy and we can't please everyone but I feel this needs to be addressed especially if you have a sit down place to eat. But keep the food up you have great product and that's hard to...
Read moreI recently enjoyed a dine-in experience offering a quick, efficient service model reminiscent of the Wisconsin Butter Burger franchise. You order at the counter from a menu board, choose your seat, and wait for your meal to be delivered.
The Ultimate Platter: If you’re craving BBQ, this place generally delivers, earning a solid 4.25 stars. However, the quality of the proteins varied. Here's my breakdown, from best to least favorite:
Beef Brisket: The brisket was the highlight—tender, flavorful, and thoroughly enjoyable. Easily the best protein on the platter.
Ribs: These ribs were quite good. They weren't touted as "fall-off-the-bone," but they had a nice chewiness that made the meat easy to enjoy without much effort.
Half Chicken: The chicken was tasty, but be wary of small bones, which could be a choking hazard for young children under six. It’s a decent choice if you're not skilled at grilling.
Pulled Pork: As a fan of pulled pork, I was disappointed here. It was excessively salty, overwhelming my taste buds.
Sides and Sauces: The beans, slaw, and mac & cheese were all enjoyable. The bread was standard, and the sauces complemented the dishes well.
Ambiance and Cleanliness: Both the front of the house and the bathrooms were immaculate, which suggests that the kitchen and prep areas are equally well-maintained.
Service: The guest service was excellent, enhancing the dining experience.
Overall Impressions: While the BBQ here is generally good, it faces stiff competition from another franchise in La Crosse. The Beef Brisket and Ribs were satisfying, but the Half Chicken was somewhat small, though flavorful. I would hesitate to recommend the pulled pork due to its...
Read moreWhile feeling homesick and hungry, I asked around about a good BBQ place. I was recommended Big Boar by a coworker. I didn't get his name but the guy who took my order was very friendly and helpful and even recommended two items from the menu. The wait time was pretty short, maybe a couple of minutes.
I fully intended on eating my ribs off of the bone but the meat slid right off so I just cave-manned it. There were four different sauces that I saw, three of which I tried (because I'm a wimp who can't eat spicy anything). The sweet BBQ sauce was the traditional sort of sauce. The Norms BBQ sauce tastes like it was maybe mustard based but still had that BBQ sauce glaze look and texture to it. Very good and I normally don't like mustard. The tangy BBQ sauce was ultimately the one I kept using and tasted jammy, maybe raspberry based?
Although the coleslaw was vinegar based rather than creamy, it did have what seemed to be bits of chopped peppers in it (not spicy). Red and green bell maybe, or at least red bell and green chili? So that redeemed it by a few points. The corn muffin was slightly sweet and soft, as a corn muffin should be, and the soft spreadable butter went great with it.
The dinner roll existed. The butter pat was nice and soft too.
I liked that it was served on a spacious tray which allowed me to be a sloppy menace without going full toddler mode on the table and my lap. Though I did somehow get butter halfway down my forearm but I'll let that speak for how much I enjoyed Big Boar BBQ.
Finally, they not only had root beer on tap, but they had my favorite root beer, MUG.
If my family from Oklahoma come to visit and need some BBQ, I know where I'll be taking...
