Update: I recently went to this establishment with one of my friends. The quality of the food and the service has really gone downhill. After about 10 minutes of being seating our waitress finally takes our drink order. She had been waiting on other tables in our vicinity the entire time. After she took our drink orders, she immediately scampered off without us having a chance to let her know we were ready to order. After another seemingly long wait, she came back with our drinks, and PROMPTLY turned to another table to ask if they would like to order dessert. I truly believe the other reason she turned back around to take our order is because I mentioned "we're ready to order" while she was in mid-turn to leave our table again.

There was seemingly a very long wait before getting our salads. We were completely finished and had waited 20-30 minutes before our entree's were delivered to our table. Just like with the drinks, our waitress delivered our entree's and immediately scampered off. While we ordered, we had asked for side sauces which were not delivered with our entrees. It was about 5 minutes before she came back to check on us. My rare steak had clearly been sitting under a heating lamp for an extended period of time. The steak was very dry and more medium-well than rare. My friends steak was slightly better. The only reason I didn't send it back was because I didn't want to wait another 20-30 minutes for my meal. By this time it had already been the better part of 45 minutes since we had arrived. This restaurant was NOT at all busy that evening. I could understand if this was a busy evening. Once we finally got our sauces, we never saw our waitress again until we ended up tracking her down to get the check.

We got no refills on our drinks and the tables around us that had finished up and left were left unbussed the entire time we were there. If this were my first experience at this restaurant I would never return and it will be a long time before I dare go back.

Original Post: The atmosphere in this historic house, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is welcoming and relaxing. The menu has something for everybody; seafood, chicken, pork, pasta, steak and more! I found the food to be delightful. The House Salad Dressing (French w/ Blue Cheese Crumbles mixed in) sounded intriguing and turned out to be very good! The NY Strip steak was cooked to perfection and was full of flavor. The only criticism that I can think of is that the wait staff seems green, but with some training and experience they’ll...

We visited Angela’s on the River at 6pm on a Wednesday to celebrate our 8th anniversary (our first time!). A gentleman greeted us at the door, offered thoughtful service, and seated us in a bright room with a wonderful view of the Coal River—a highlight of the night. Dress code seems relaxed; my casual attire was perfectly acceptable. Parking is across the street, but there’s a spot to drop off your hot date (or your mom) first.

The special was advertised as halibut and flounder—baked or fried. I wanted baked halibut blackened and baked shrimp blackened, and she wanted fried flounder with fried shrimp. Our waitress was prompt with drinks, but it took longer than expected to take our order. Unfortunately, the kitchen could only prepare fried halibut and baked flounder, and they weren’t able to do any blackening, so we had to settle. The fried halibut was the tastier option, while the flounder, though dense and meaty, lacked seasoning and wasn’t blackened as requested.

We were disappointed by the portion of just two small rolls, but they were tasty (and they did give us 2 more). The scalloped potatoes were chunky in cheese sauce—not like any scalloped potatoes I’ve seen before—and just okay. Sides like Italian green beans were also just okay, and one of our sides (fries) was missing and never arrived. The tartar sauce had an unexpected thousand island flavor, but was enjoyable.

We also noticed the neighboring table ordered fried flounder and didn’t seem to be informed that it had to be baked instead—something that could lead to confusion for other diners.

Staff appeared young and doing their best, but the overall service met only basic expectations—except for the standout welcome from the gentleman at the entrance. The value was reasonable ($36 for two, with shrimp at no extra charge).

The atmosphere is enhanced by beautiful water color paintings of riverboats that you might see on the Kanawha River shoving barges, available for purchase. In summary: come for the view and approachable staff, but temper expectations regarding food consistency and kitchen flexibility. We’d consider returning to try regular menu items in hopes of a...

First time trying and will definitely be the last. My son chose Angela’s for his after graduation dinner after reviewing the menu. We had a party of 7 total but separated checks 4/3. Waitress took our drink order walked away and we didn’t see her again for 20 minutes. At which time I placed an order for 2 appetizers, Buffalo shrimp and the crab dip, which ultimately was the only good and flavorful food of our entire meal. My son ordered Angela’s filet ($30) medium rare and received a medium well filet with baked macaroni and cheese and the noodles were overcooked and was the consistency of baby food and Italian green beans which he said were ok. I ordered a salad with ranch dressing and the dressing tasted like dill seasoning and Chicken Parm ($18) and the chicken was burnt and the marinara sauce was overly bland. My other son ordered Spinach stuffed chicken and a salad. Once again the noodles in this dish were overcooked and the chicken was bland($16). My niece ordered the fried jumbo shrimp ($18) which were good sized shrimp but had zero flavor, mashed potatoes and corn. The other party of three that were with us was underwhelmed as well with their food options and service. I asked for A1 sauce and that took 15 minutes to get and I had to ask for a basket of rolls which she forgot and I had to remind her and then thereafter took 15 minutes to get. Gratuity was added to my bill which she made me aware of at the time of handing my bill. I paid with a card at which time when reviewing my bill had to inquire about the added charges because I paid with a card. I don’t leave reviews let alone a bad review, but I feel like with the prices of the food at this so called fancy restaurant, I had to voice my (our) opinion so as to warn folks that the old saying you get what you pay for does NOT apply...

From start to finish a wonderful experience! We were sat immediately and were asked which dining area we would like. We chose the large window area to watch the river & all the things! Our server was Alley & she had cocktails in front of us within moments! House Pinot Grigio was on point! We never can find great wine when we are out and about -but Angela’s offers excellent choices. The crab dip was delicious! Hubs couldn’t stop eating it! Rolls were yummy as well. Couldn’t stop eating the Summer Salad with Raspberry Vinaigrette! We shared the Stuffed Cod & collard greens. I could eat that every day! The ambiance was on point with the view-great music and service! Angela’s on the River restaurant is hands down the Best Experience we have had in the State! We travel a lot and always have something go array or the flavor is off. Not here! Being a fellow restaurateur I’m super picky but I settle bc for me I’m just grateful to get out. You need to run to Angela’s and enjoy the better things in life without breaking the bank! Prices are affordable and the Owner was my leader back in the 80’s and 90’s. So she knows excellent food & service! Just cannot say enough wonderful things about experience! Enjoy it all! Great venue for weddings-reunions-birthdays and celebrations! Anytime you want to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown & corporate box places to eat. Woman owned and operated. Historic Chilton House. Close to gasoline and route 60. Great place to walk ur fur baby if ur traveling or have ur baby with u. The most unique & affordable dining you will have in WV! Thank You Alley & Angela for a great date night! Can’t wait to be a regular & enjoy all your great selections! #stalbans #riverview #comfortfood #bestrestaurant
