I usually stay away from American/Chinese restaurants. For the most part they have been a consistent disappointment. I read many positive reviews of this restaurant so I decided to give it a try.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is no frills although very comfortable. The owners of the restaurant are very friendly and pleasant.
We ordered the Pork fried rice, Hot and Sour Soup, Wonton Soup, Almond chicken, Pad thai chicken, and Hunan pork very spicy.
Our dinner arrived in only 8 mins after ordering it. I have never had such quick turnaround on an order.
The Wonton soup
The Soup was good and tasted as expected.
The Hot and Sour Soup
This soup had a very good flavor although it also had a sweet taste which was not expected. Don't sweeten the soup. When you make that change it will be my #2 Hot and Sour Soup in the area.
Almond Chicken
This dish hands down is the best that I have ever had. Thin crunchy crust, tender and juicy meat.
Pad Thai chicken
This dish was good but missing something.
Hunan pork very spicy
It had a good taste. IMO just missing an element. It was ordered very spicy although it came out mild. No big deal. They gave me some chili spice that more then took care of lack of spice.
Pork Fried Rice
They never brought it. I wanted to try their pork fried rice very much. I'm always in search of excellence in Fried Rice. It surprises me that so many Chinese restaurants make sub par Fried rice. It seems like Fried Rice would be a restaurant's solid dish. In my experience not the case.
The food servings are huge which is great for takeout and we had a lot of takeout :-) For all we had the price was very reasonable.
Will I go back ?
Yes. Especially for the...
Read moreI ordered a Sesame Chicken dinner with fried rice and an extra egg roll. I'll go ahead and say that egg rolls were the best part of the dish. Fried rice was gloopy and tasted nothing like traditional Chinese fried rice, which is a dish by itself (it was basically just rice browned with soy sauce). Both chicken and rice tasted like they were fried in some dirty oil (definitely tasted overly processed).
But chicken was a "king" of the dish, or should I say a...joke? To begin with, I had to add my own sesame to it, what a joke... A few pieces were undercooked and rubbery, covered in a thick layer of overly sweet and salty sauce, with absolutely no crunch (the batter on top was destroyed by the sauce). I had to scrape that disgusting layer off of all the chicken pieces and refry it on my pan. I also beautified their fried rice by also refrying it with some red chili pepper, shallots, and spring onions (essential ingredients for fried rice).
Needless to say, I will not be going back. I wonder what all the homages are to here in all of those 5 star reviews... But I think I know - most Americans have no idea what actual Chinese food is, despite the restaurant selling mainly the American Chinese stuff. Evidently, they serve the public that has no idea, or any palette. I highly doubt any gourmands would be dining at Golden Chopsticks (and I personally wanted to see what all the good reviews were about).
This dish is way overpriced for the quality of food that they serve. I highly doubt I'll be going back to try anything else to give them another...
Read moreI love this place. I am a clsssic Chinese food purist from the 70s and 80s when places like Rose Garden and Kow Loon were putting out perfect old school Chinese cuisine.
Over the last decade, especially since Covid, all the best spots closed down or sold to people who had no clue as to what they were doing.
There's a place outside of Jackson that puts potatoes in their egg foo young. Horrible.
I was about to give up when out of the blue, an old friend called me up to suggest Golden Chopsticks. He said that they do the egg foo right. Well, I had to see for myself. Lo and behold, he was correct. I was blown away. It had been so long since I had proper egg foo young. Loved it.
The wonton soup is good, kind of plain...needs roast pork and more vegetable garnish. The egg rolls are excellent. Tea is high quality. The fried rice served with dinner is pretty boring. No vegetables, no egg, no meat, just rice fried in soy sauce. I don't know if the entree fried rice is done this way. I hope not. They need to revisit this aspect. Just stick with white rice. I would actually pay more for proper fried rice with my combo.
That's really the only complaint except I wish they would serve some of the entrees ala carte. I'd love to order almond boneless chicken and add one patty of egg foo young.
Looking forward to trying more of their offerings. My fiance loves the sushi!
You won't go wrong...
