I've been craving Hainanese chicken for weeks. Weeks, I tell you. There's something about that ginger-spicy dipping sauce that has been gnawing at me. So finally after denying myself, I dragged my parents here to have what else, their number one special. Of course everything on their menu is chicken. My mom ordered pho with chicken. This pho wasn't your typical chicken pho, it had stuff like livers, and well other chicken parts that you may not enjoy but it's a cafe in Westminster, you're going to get the weird stuff too. My dad and I both ordered the number one Hainan chicken with rice.
My mom noted that the chicken is brought out cold, but deboned. How nice of them to debone it for us! The skin is left on but the fat has melted away in the cooking process. If you don't like chicken skin then this place is probably not for you. The whole point of this dish is for you to eat the chicken with the skin, and I suppose you could eat just the meat. But what would be the point? It's really up to you. My mom was surprised that my dad and I cleared our plates. It was that good.
The sauce is set out for you as well and it's up to you to put the ginger in the sauce or set up a dipping station for yourself. I prefer to add the ginger to the spicy sauce. I didn't go with the soy sauce but they give that to you also. The rice is piping hot infused with chicken broth and fat. It's so freaking delicious. It quelled my craving too. I know I'll be back the next time I want Hainanese...
Read moreIt's really clean eating when it comes to the hainan style chicken. I felt that it was a little bland even with the sauces but I don't mind it much. it's just lacking a little something and I can't figure it out because I don't think you're supposed to have salt on the chicken...you're opinion may differ from mine of course. Service was fine unlike most of the reviews I've read, who cares if they don't speak perfect English, you're at a Viet restaurant. I'm very perturbed by those who review complaining so damn much as if they're royalty and a self proclaimed food critique or "foodie", it's a mom and pop business and your words can literally hurt their business. If you know restaurant owners, you know it's a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and hot sauces...you would probably like the hainan chicken. Furthermore, my 3 stars is simply for that dish alone and not for the restaurant in its entirety.
3 stars for the hainan chicken. 5 stars for the Vietnamese kid who served us.
Just try it for yourself and don't mind the jerks who write such heinous reviews, get the pho outta here...
Read moreI was in the area to take care of some real estate business. It was around lunch time, and I remember I had Com Ga Nam An Chicken Rice on my to-try list. I got there around 11am. The restaurant was still empty. But it got filled up pretty quickly after that. This Vietnamese restaurant specializes in chicken. There’s chicken rice dishes and chicken noodle dishes.
I ordered their #1 Com Ga Nam An – Nam An’s style chicken rice. You can choose to have the chicken with skin or without skin. The chicken was done really well. It still has the chewy texture to it. Chicken rice was flavorful, and I can taste each grain of rice. There were 3 dipping sauce – ginger oil, sweet sauce, and sweet soy sauce. I like to dip my chicken in mixture of all 3 sauces. The rice also comes with a bowl of soup. I assume it is chicken soup (?) with cilantro and scallion. It was a tasty plate of rice. Just wish portion was a bit bigger.
I would definitely visit again if I’m...
