This place is a joke. If you're unfamiliar with Kim's Uncle, let me explain. They do have "good" tavern style pizza. At one point they had the reputation of having great pizza, but guess what.... a lot of other real good pizza places have come to be in the western Chicago burbs. So Kim's Uncle is no longer the greatest. They have plenty of good competition around them. Here's the thing though.... They have one pizza oven. For that reason, they can't keep up with orders. And they have one person manning the phone and that one person gets overwhelmed quickly to the point that you'll often get put on a long hold and maybe even hung up on. Basically, you need to call your order in the very second they open, because that one person who works the phone gets hit hard with calls the very second they open. Then, you have to hope that IF you get through on the phone they can get your order in a reasonable time frame, because again they only have 1 pizza oven. There will be times that your call won't even go through. There will be times when you get put on hold for 10 minutes only to be hung up on. There will be times you actually place an order, but then are told it won't be ready for 3 hours because 100 people are ahead of you. And then every now and then you'll get lucky and actually be able to order a pizza for pickup within an hour of making the call.
Some people think this is fun and cool; hope that you get your call answered and hope to get a pizza by this great place. Maybe at one point it was cool, but there's way too much other good pizza within 5 minutes of this place for me to get "excited" about their awful customer service. They are clearly making a lot of money, so how bout buying a 2nd oven? How bout putting 2 people on the phones? Granted, I know places like Gene & Judes for example are also small and have long lines, but they have found a way to keep the lines moving fast and nobody is ever at risk of not getting food lol. For whatever reason, Kim's Uncle can't seem to figure this out. Im sorry, but wasting my time to end up NOT getting food is not "part of the experience" for me - it's just annoying. Especially when there's good pizza all over the place.
The pizza here is probably an 8 out of 10 but it's NOT the greatest pizza on earth like some will say. Combine that with all the stuff mentioned above and this place is just not worth it.... such an...
Read moreWhen I first heard about this place, of course I was skeptical. Chicago has some pretty great tavern style pizza, but also some really bad pizza. I was going to be in the area so I called right at 3 and ordered a sausage pizza.
I picked it up, and I knew as soon as I got in the car and smelled the aroma, this was gonna be good. Got to my destination and opened the box. Pizza was incredible looking. Toppings evenly distributed, sauce all the way out to the edge of the crust. Cooked on the well done side (which it should be) I took a bite and was instantly transported to another dimension. This tastes like the pizza I had from another local place that closed 30 years ago. I cannot stress enough how good this pizza is. The crust was very thin and very crispy, even in the middle (even the leftovers the next day cold was crispy), the sauce is thick and flavorful. The sausage is homemade and has a nice heat to it. They have the golden recipe that makes a Chicago thin crust perfect.
They ferment their dough, and they use the best ingredients. The space is quite small and the oven is not very big (Vintage 1956). There is only one size - 14". These folks have some passion for the art.
I went back a week later to order again, and this time I also got a pie for my mom who does not eat cheese. She was also floored at how great it was. (see mom I told you!) Both sausage, mushroom, green pepper and onion. They were incredible as well! Crust holds up to veggies too!
As I was picking up the pizza's the owners were there and they are super friendly and love talking about pizza. One thing I noticed is that the person making a pizza in the back was really taking their time. I think this probably contributes to the quality. They only can make so many pizza's a day so why not make them all GREAT!
They do not accept cash, so bring your card, and try to call early since they do tend to sell out. This folks. is the best pizza in Chicago as far as I'm concerned. My measure of goodness is Villa Nova in Stickney. My family has been going there probably since my dad was a teenager in the 1950's. This is better. Can you open a location in...
Read moreA great carry-out pizza place - it's a tavern style, cracker thin crust, with a slightly salty sauce, adequate amounts of cheese, and your choice of toppings.
I chose 2 pies for my first order: pepperoni, and sausage & mushroom. The pepperoni I didn't agree with, but this is not a full knock against the pizza and the place - it seemed like it was extra salty with a bit of a spicy kick (I like spicy) but in the wrong way. The sausage & mushroom was heavenly - nice spice and salt, sausage was very tasty and meaty, and the blend of the crust, sauce, and toppings were nearly perfection.
Again, this is a carry-out place - there are 2 small tables indoors and a picnic table outside next to the muni car park, so take it home to eat and enjoy you will.
It's a card only place - I heard, emphasis on heard, you can use cash but it must be exact as they either didn't deal with cash or won't have exact change. Just bring your plastic and it will work.
And tip them well - the few people there work hard to take your order, make it fresh, bake it with the small but very useful Fauld's oven, and get it prepped for you to eat and enjoy.
My rating is 4.5/5, and will come back when I can - I work and live at home too far, so it's a mini road trip for me. Like going to Burrito Heaven in Summit.
Also, eating as leftovers were very decent - I would of reheated it with my gas oven or air fryer, but ate it all cold instead and was still crispy and...
