This is a nice place and a welcome addition to an area comprised primarily of "run of the mill" type restaurants that are typically found in small towns like Whitehall.
Employees were friendly and attentive, food was out quickly. It's self-service as far as drinks and such, but they do bring your food and utensils to the table. Glass plates, real silverware. Prices were very reasonable for the portion sizes.
I ordered the Mojo Cubano sandwich, which comes with one side, I chose to get the Tex N' Mac (mac n' cheese with real bacon pieces mixed in.)
The sandwich was good, but could have been great with a few minor changes. Typically, a Cuban is made with honey ham, or some other such type of "sweet" ham. This is important because it balances the overall flavor of the sandwich. They use smoked ham, which made it just slightly on the salty side, but nothing to complain about overall. The pulled pork on it was good, flavorful and moist, no complaints there. The condiments were pretty standard for a Cuban: dill pickles, swiss cheese, and deviated slightly using Dijon mustard. Personally, I am a fan of Dijon on Cubans, but they are traditionally made with standard yellow mustard. The main issue I take with it is the bread. They don't use the standard Cuban bread, or equivalent; instead, it is made on a toasted sub bun. The bread is supposed to be thin and dense, and then "pressed" and grilled, either applying pressure in a pan, or in a sandwich press to give it a nice crisp exterior. The sub bun was none of those things, and just felt out of place. Overall, I would order it again, but don't expect a true to form Cuban.
The Tex N' Mac was what truly failed me. Perhaps it was because it was the last hour they were open, I'm not sure. The macaroni was cooked well, not overly done and mushy, which I cannot stand. The bacon pieces were plentiful and frankly, cooked the only way bacon should be cooked: just between chewy and crispy. Firm, but without crunch. The cheese sauce, however, if it could be called that, was a disaster. In fact, to even include cheese in the name would be an insult to cheese. It had the color of a cheese sauce, without any of the flavor or viscosity. It would be more apt to be called cheese-colored-water. I would not order this again, try it at your own risk.
That being said, I still give it 5/5. Keep in mind, this rating is inclusive of the area Bone Ends is in. Would this be a 5/5 in a larger city? Probably not, though it would also be unfair to judge it based only on two items.
I will definitely return and try...
Read moreIf I could give this place zero stars, I would. Do not go to Bone Ends! I ordered a salad, and the lettuce was brown and the chicken tasted disgusting… undercooked! Also had loaded nachos. A little better than the salad, but not much. Restaurant was dirty and the workers were quite unkempt and unprofessional. I wondered why there was no one else in the restaurant after having such high reviews… I now know why. DO NOT RECOMMEND!
*edited You’re right, I asked for a different dressing because I am dairy free. Most restaurants will easily accommodate that. Yours did- they gave me a vinaigrette, which in itself was fine. The salad was not dry?? I didn’t say that! The lettuce was brown and the chicken was the worst chicken I’ve tasted in my life. And same with the nachos. The meat was ok. Of course I couldn’t have the cheese, so I asked for salsa. Like I said, it wasn’t as bad as the salad, but not great. I’ve had WAY better. I wanted to give this review for others who may be stopping through Whitehall for food like we were, on a trip. Hopefully others will see this and...
Read moreThis is a nice small restaurant with an at counter order system. Something you don't see often anymore aside from fast food. The exterior make you really think it's a barbeque house. As you walk in though, the first thing I noticed was the smell. Various barbeque sauces and pulled meats mixing in the air to really start making your mouth water.
Some of the choices on the menu have fun names. Everything looked really good but I had to make a decision. The Asgardian was a Taco(2) with pulled beef, quest fresco cheese, salsa Verde, potatoes, and siracha sauce on a blue tortilla shell(i assume eggplant-corn shell). While the Taco had decent flavor, it was very dry. The mixture of everything did not do well to moisten the meal. Alas, it was a hard eat.
If I were to recommend a solution, it would be adding an additional sauce to the mix or having the beef barbecued with a tangy flavor. I wouldn't recommend sweet or spicy as it would take from the cheese and salsa...
