TL:DR: the food was good, although prepared slightly differently than I'm used to. Each dish Needed soy sauce or salt but their food was seasoned well otherwise. A little greasy, but not bad. Maybe a tad pricey for the quality, but overall good experience
Here's the really wordy pretentious version:
I got one of the family deals that came with a soda, general tso's chicken, pork lo mien, fried rice, egg rolls, and crab Rangoon.
Every Chinese restaurant in America does things differently because American Chinese food has really only existed in this form since the 1950's. So it's understandable when some restaurants go with different recipes or try other things. That being said, when I order fried rice I assume I'm going to get pretty crispy sautéed rice with vegetables, because that's what most restaurants serve. Here, it's a little different, it seems like a little bit of turmeric and oil and maybe put in a pan long enough to get hot. It tastes good, just not what I expected
General Tso's was petty good, but it was a little too sweet for me. I added soy sauce and it was a good choice because it helped balance everything out and bring out flavor. Again General Tso's is one of those dishes that was made up from whole cloth, so variations on flavor, sweetness and spiciness are to be expected.
Lo mein is actually more authentic although still americanized, and this was pretty delicious. Borderline greasy but not terrible. The protein was cooked well. I could've used more soy sauce or salt, but once I did all the flavor was there.
The egg rolls were the star, they were truly good, I usually dip mine in soy sauce anyway, but their spices were really good, could have used more pork and less cabbage, but the flavor was excellent.
Crab Rangoon were cooked well, and if you like other crab Rangoon in town, I suspect you'll like these. I have unrealistic expectations on crab rangoon and I know it. There was a restaurant where I grew up that basically just wrapped cream cheese in wonton wrappers and fried them perfectly... ever since I've been looking for a replacement because this recipe was so simple. Everywhere I've been to since over cooks theirs so that they clump up inside, or they add imitation crab making them really sweet, or do both which is the absolute worst for me. While I didn't find my holy grail here, these we're actually fried perfectly which has been hard enough to find in town. These didn't have imitation crab, but they were excessively sweet for my taste... a little soy sauce and hot mustard seemed to fix the problem, but again, they're not my favorite. They might be my favorite in town, but that's a low bar considering the amount of over fried crab Rangoon I keep running into.
The one thing that really impressed me is that even though I doused everything in soy sauce, each dish was seasoned well that the soy sauce wasn't the dominating flavor. The spices they use are really good.
All in all, it was pretty good. Nothing too exciting, but it satisfied my itch for fast Chinese food and they did it well.
PS: to the person thinking that the fried rice has MSG in it because it was yellow seems to not know what MSG is. To be fair most Americans only know it as a thing that's in Chinese food... but thats not entirely accurate. It's a salt substitute that has been used for quite a while and occurs naturally in some vegatebles like tomatoes. It's most notably used in Japanese cooking, not Chinese food. Since the MSG scare in the 90's (which was almost entirely without merit) almost no American chinese restaurants use it excessively. It also isn't a coloring and it would have had a very obvious umami and salty flavor, something the fried rice is specifically lacking. It's not MSG, but the complaint is using a stereotype to put them down which comes off as racist.
One last note about MSG is that its in many pre-made spices at the grocery store because it's safe, a decent preservative and enhances flavor... Italian food that you make at home likely has more MSG than most...
Read moreExtremely rude employees! Apparently they did not get orientation on how to speak to or treat customers well! I went in to pick up an online order and once I got there I was being charged $1 more than the price given on my confirmation. When I asked about it I was treated very rudely as if I was causing a problem for questioning the price difference. Once they told me that I was being charged more for a "special request" then I asked why didn't that price difference reflect in the online cart they did not have an answer for my question and kept saying well it is $1 more what do you want me to do? I said well, forget the special request and give us what normally comes with the meal if you are going to charge us more for it. The young woman rolled her eyes at me and took the plate to the kitchen where they dumped out the lo mein and added rice to the plate. The moral of this story ladies and gentlemen is DO NOT depend on the price that is given to you on the online ordering and Definitely DO NOT expect good customer service from these JERKS! Enough said! China King, you will NEVER in this lifetime ever receive any more of my hard earned dollars! Remember that it is your customers who keep your business doors open! My tip to you is invest in customer service training for...
Read moreWe ordered two to-go plates yesterday afternoon. This place was not busy and I will say the only complaint I have is that it was obvious the owners working the front counter had no clue what food they were serving. They could not answer any questions about the food and seemed clueless about the whole menu or even flavors of food. It was off-putting and I was hesitant to order but I was hungry so I gave them a chance.
Roasted pork hunan-spicy- portions were great, my meal was under nine dollars and I had meat and veggies in a container itself and rice on the side, lots of food. I got Crab Rangoon came in an order of four and they were delicious I think it was about three dollars, no crab just cream cheese but cooked well. My food was delicious and flavorful exactly what I wanted.
General TSO combo plate - portions were smaller and it actually cost more. It came with an egg roll on the side, very flavorful. The chicken was fried and there was no crunchy breading it was all meat, I do feel the breading was a little bit thick for my liking but the sauce was good. The chicken could have cooked a bit longer and less breading and I think it would have been perfect. Overall we had a great experience here, wait time is going to vary on their business but we had a short wait well worth it...
