We went here with family last night, this place is amazing!!! We arrived on Saturday night at 5pm, they donāt open until 5:30, but we heard there is a line. We were about twenty or 25 deep in the line and it was fairly long by the time they opened the doors at 5:30. Upon arrival you sign in and get a ticket. You wait in a room or bar area and can order drinks after you get on a ticket. When you are called into the back, the menu is limited so expect that before arrival. This is one of the best oyster bars Iāve been to and Iām from the beach. We had oysters and shrimp, the shrimp is already peeled and they offer spicy or plain. They shuck the oysters as they come out and you can order oysters light, medium, or well done. The cocktail sauce is served warm and is very good. They give you warm butter. They provide crackers. They also have ghost sauce which is really good. They sell these sauces in large quantities to go if you would like to purchase some. They will make a red rooster oyster, very good my son says. I enjoyed this place and we will be back! I will arrive before five next time. The waiter said Sundays and Mondays are not as busy. I attached the menu which is current...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis place is OLD SCHOOL!!! This is A GOOD thing! It opened in 1935 and my mother is 90 and used to go here when she was young.
You walk in and immediately notice what looks like a waiting/dining room. Don't be fooled. This is just to wait until you get seated at the bar, back off to the left. You can have a soft drink or beer/wine while you wait.
The bar is very simple. Just a wooden bar with drains and wood cutting boards for your "bartender" to shuck your oysters. They have more than just steamed oysters. They have crab, shrimp and scallops and well. It's an typically very fresh. The oysters, this night, were from Galveston TX. One of the things that makes everything tater so good it's their cocktail sauce. It's a secret recipe that has been and part of this restaurant since the beginning. It's served warm from a pitcher and refilled constantly.
The bartenders are typically all very nice and very friendly and funny. Some have been working there for 30 years+.
Always a fun time and a great meal. It's not the cheapest offering in town, but something that you'll remember and be back for...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIf you like oysters, you have to try this place if you are in the area. Opened in 1935, second oldest oyster bar on the east coast, steeped in history. They have a few other things (shrimp, scallops, crab legs); but that's only if you have a member of your group that refuses to eat oysters -- don't go unless you are going for oysters. You have a choice of steamed or raw (steamed oysters are very good, better than I expected, and what I would recommend), along with a to-die-for cocktail sauce, melted butter, and saltine crackers. You can also get a side of broccoli and cheese, but almost no one that we saw did. Oh, and you do this while sitting on very uncomfortable high stools in the old bar area, elbow to elbow with fellow diners, watching your shucker plop your oysters into a bowl in front of you about as fast as you can eat them. And if you don't get there VERY early (around 5:00pm for their 5:30pm first seating), you'll likely be waiting a long time for a bar seat. I'm glad I went -- and the oysters were wonderful -- but it's not a place I would go to on a...
