Finally got the opportunity to go to the Green House Restaurant (GHR), after waiting, given COVID normal operations and shortages. Many different observations. The physical restaurant was beautiful, the staff... friendly, knowledgeable, attentive and yet, very busy. We chose to seat outside, in the very green and lovely garden patio. A couple of observations... noisy with the traffic on Oleander... the table to chair height ratio off, sat too low, and they should consider a ceiling fan to move the air, helping with gnats and the occasional second-hand cigarette some from the surrounding outdoor restaurant. The black glass-top table was not clean when we were seated and we mentioned it to the hostess, but no one bothered to wipe it.
The dishes look amazing on the website menu and were equally beautiful when served. The Arugula & Herbs salad was excellent and yet nothing special for a great salad. Each of the dishes seemed to lack adequate seasoning. The King Trumpet Scallions looked astonishing and tasted very good, but it was not scallops, the texture being equal to taste for me. The Aubergine Filet was tasty, and I do like eggplant, but did not remind me of steak, in taste or texture. The biggest disappointment was the Italian Sausage & Fennel dish. The sauce was bitter, and again, the Sausage texture was not even close.
So, as a confirmed meat lover and consumer, I pose an age-old question: Why do vegans make food look like meat? If the drive to end (or slow) the meat protein sins, why not present the food as non-meat. Skeuomorphism will not change the culture and does not (for me at least) bring me closer to my family and culture... and does not serve as a bridge to veganism.
My wife who was most interested in giving the GHR a try, and enjoys tasty small bits and seldom eats again after a meal... as soon as we arrived home, prepared and consumed a quick burrito made with homemade pork chili verde from our refrig. Likely a good thing that PTs Grille was closed. COVID times are challenging and the GHR is definitely worth a try but unequivocally not 5 Star dining experience for me and not worth...
Read moreFirst let me start off by saying that the vegan food was incredibly delicious but very expensive. It is a great date night place. I am not vegan but love vegan options. They do rotate the menu based on seasonal veggies and what they get from local farms. This was my 1st time dining at this restaurant although I had heard a lot of great things about it. The atmosphere is very clean with white chairs/sofa type benches and nice wood tables. The bar is very pretty and bottles are backlit with soft lighting. I was there with my friend on a Wednesday evening and it was "2 for" wine Wednesday, so we started out with 2 glasses of pinot gris that was delicious. We ordered 2 appetizers, the special was charred broccoli with a bed of potato puree and pearl onions in a red wine reduction and the second one was thinly sliced beets with cashew "cheese" dollops with sumac. I also ordered a chickpea and curry soup that was one of the favorites. Dinner was lions mane mushroom and my friend had a pasta dish with harissa and cherry tomatoes. The lions mane mushroom was phenomenal with a delicious gravy and a square of thinly sliced potatoes-Delicious!! Everything was extremely well seasoned and very tasty. We also had dessert which consisted of a piece of chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and salted caramel with chopped nuts, and a vegan cheesecake which tasted of coconut and also had chocolate and salted caramel drizzle. Both desserts were not overly sweet and very good. Now for the down side. The cost is very high....or maybe I'm just not use to classy food 🤷🏼♀️ that's entirely possible. The portion sizes are not large but they are adequate and very satisfying. I do think that some folks will find the prices limiting but it was such a great experience that everybody should treat themselves now and then. Or bill for 2 was $167 and with tip came to right around $200 but like I said we had 2 appetizers, a small bowl of soup, 2 dinners and 2 desserts with 2 glasses of wine(which was buy one get one). So you be the judge on the cost, but if you are going to spend money on a delicious dinner this is a great place to...
Read moreAn absolutely incredible experience. I have been waiting to try The Green House for quite some time and I was not disappointed at all. From the atmosphere to the dining aesthetic, everything about this restaurant feels curated to be a total experience. I had checked out their social media as well as been provided reviews from friends, but my expectations were completely blown away.
Everything on the menu is vegan and as a recently converted vegan (former vegetarian), I was expecting a similar menu and taste to other vegan restaurants in the area. The Green House is an elevated difference to other restaurants I have experienced in the area. The food has an element that feels like a blend between sophistication and creativity. Each ingredient is selected purposefully and designed to be fully tasted. I had the opportunity to try the Grilled Lion's Mane and the Japanese Eggplant. Both were deliciously unique and I highly recommend both dishes.
The restaurant has an ambience that demonstrates intimacy and intention. When you step inside, you are met by the restaurant's welcoming and knowledgeable staff. In the ordering process, they explain the details of The Green House, offer suggestions, and display care in their interactions. It was a busier evening when I went, but that didn't detract from the attention I received as a guest.
The Green House is a dining experience that anyone visiting or living in Wilmington should experience. Their innovative and locally sourced vegan dishes are unique and delicious. There menu is changing based on seasonality, so it keeps the experience fresh and thoughtful for returning guests. I am looking forward to returning...
