Iāve had the the distinct pleasure of visiting and spending some time in New Zealand, So when somebody tells me that thereās a bakery close by that serves meat pies Iām definitely down.
BurtoNZ bakery Is nestled in in the corner of a Save Mart shopping plaza. If you werenāt paying attention to the sign and how they cleverly highlighted the NZ, ya probably wouldnāt even know the difference. Walking in thereās subtle visual cues reminding you of the New Zealand flare this place has tried to create. Walking in, even heard some New Zealand accents from a party having pastries outside.
They have a pretty good selection of sweet pastries along with a vast selection of artisan breads that they make on site here daily. What I am after sits between the two in itās own display case. If Iām hungry and eating with my eyes Iām already full, because they all look amazing. You can tell that whoever makes these pies puts great care in to making sure that theyāre baked absolutely perfectly, not one of them looks off. Selections include bacon egg, mince beef, chicken, savory southwestern, steak potato, steak cheese. Iām after two flavors today; mushroom goat cheese and steak/mushroom. Perfectly warm with some sweet ketchup on the side. Man if I only had some of that New Zealand milk Iād be in heaven. The place is clean, people sitting round tables inside and out. Every once in a while you get a whiff of the fresh breads being made in the back. As far as price point is concerned, Be prepared to spend at least $8 bucks per pie. I would definitely say...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIt you are looking for authentic New Zealand/Australian meat pies, sausage rolls and sweets this is the place. Our favorites are the mince and cheese, the steak and mushroom, and finally the sausage rolls.
On the sweeter side of New Zealand (Aussies would argue the origins are with them) delicacies include the raspberry and chocolate lamington cakes complete with real whipped cream and smidge of house made raspberry jam. Let's not forget the cream bun, however in the case for BurtoNZ a cream roll, filled with real whipped cream with a delicate smidge of house made raspberry jam and lightly dusted with powdered sugar (looks sweet but more delicate than over sweet).
Please note, there is no one else in the Bay Area that makes pies close to these and lamingtons and cream rolls so plan ahead what you want to eat.
We always order what we want to eat fresh and order frozen savories to take home. BurtoNZ needs about an hours notice to prepare you ready to eat and take home items. Typically you can call ahead or message them via Facebook Messenger.
For those who travel with Tesla's there is a supercharging location across the street so no worries there. For everyone else it's worth the cost in fuel to come here.
We mainly purchase what can't be found anywhere, so the breads, rolls, and standard items we leave for locals or Americans...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA little taste of New Zealand! The bakery is a bit hidden but right next to Safeway in the shopping center here. There are a couple of tables and chairs just outside where you can enjoy your baked goods. The pastry is spot on and definitely crafted by a skilled baker! Prices are reasonable too. They didn't make any scotch eggs the day we came so we'll try another day for those. Meat pies are now $9 each but they're very hearty and filling. While I still miss that rich gooey top quality NZ cheese, the pies here are still tasty. Croissants are amazing as well. We got a little bit of everything.. almost. Some of my favorites were the almond croissant, blackberry cheesecake, and lambingtons (especially raspberry). I'm still working through the various flavors of meat pies (bought a few cold ones to warm up at home) so jury's still out on that but I'll update once I figure out my top pies. If you're a meat lover, definitely go for the sausage roll. This is a great little bakery and one of a kind since I've yet to come across a (specifically) NZ bakery here in the Bay Area/surrounding areas. If you're in the area or down for a little drive this is...
