I was a Chipotle fan for a long time before I ever tried California Tortilla (hereafter referred to as Cal Tort). They recently opened this Cal Tort close to my house and since it was closer than Chipotle I figured I would give it a try. I was skeptical at first and figured it would just be a lame rip-off of Chipotle like a Qdoba or Moe's deal. When I first walked in I was pleased with the atmosphere which was colorful and inviting. I walked up to the counter and was greeted with a pleasant hello which was different than the usual cold greeting at my local Chipotle. I was happy to see a menu full of choices and also I was also glad I didn't have to order down a cafeteria style line like at some places. After I placed my order I turned around to get my drink and saw the most glorious site I had yet to lay my eyes on all day. It was The Wall of Flame. This is where they have over 75 different kinds of hot sauce ranging from mildly spicy to colon cleansing fire sauce. I almost couldn't hold in my joy as I selected several kinds of hot sauces and brought them to my table. By the time I got back to the table they called my name indicating my meal was ready. When my food arrived at the table I looked down at the bundle of joy they called a California Screamin Burrito that consisted of blackened chicken, rice, queso and fajita veggies. It was so nicely rolled that I didn't want to eat, I just wanted to stare at it. It is important to have that perfect wrap on a burrito or else it just turns into a big mess after a few bites. After just lovingly staring at this masterpiece for a few minutes I began to douse it with a hot sauce called Rectal Rocket Fuel then promptly sunk my teeth into my first taste of my new love. from that first bite I knew that I was done with Chipotle and I would be having a long and passionate relationship with Cal Tort. I have been back several times since my first visit three weeks ago trying different menu selections and each one has been as good as the first. I look forward to the times that I can come back to my new favorite casual...
Read moreThis used to be my favorite place to eat. Since it opened I have eaten here prolly close to 75 times. It was the best and never got old. That is in the past however. Since it was recently sold the new ownership has really brought the place down. Everything from getting orders wrong to food quality to long lines at times. It's sad to see my favorite place to eat go right down to tubes. Tonight the straw that broke the camels back was my wife's food was all wrong. My tacos were soft shell instead of hard like I ordered. The quaso is all watery and the chips are chewy raw. The time before this I was in and a lady was in there mad as hell getting a refund for something(not sure what happened) but she still wanted the kids meals for her kids and I thought they should have given it to her given she was dissatisfied. But it seems like all kids run this place now as the manager that night couldn't have been older then 20 and did not handle the dissatisfied customer very well. That night I just wanted to order and they had a trainee up there taking orders unsupervised. Not the trainees fault but new management and ownership is terrible. I will stay away from now on. Edit: Have seen considerable improvement here since the new employees have started to settle in. I see the owners in here working which is great to see them engaged so many levels down. Operational improvements have led to better efficiencies and training for employees seems to be much better. I have seen some new employees starting out there but they have a partner watching and helping them learn. They still have the younger lady manager but she seems to have matured professionally as I do not see employees on their phones at nights when she is working and she is always visible. Glad to see this turn around because I always...
Read moreBetter than Chipotle? Darn straight. This place offers a wonderful menu of burritos, bowls, and tacos. Everything is freshly made. I ordered the taco tornado burrito. I ordered it extra spicy. That meant extra jalapenos! Still not spicy enough, but it packed a little bit of a kick.
My son ordered the bacon chicken bowl. Very nice mix, large pieces of chicken, and nice bacon pieces. He said it was awesome.
My wife ordered the fajitas which she really enjoyed. We got guac and chips on the side.
The show was the wall of hot sauces. Oh my, what fun. All the sauces were labeled in order of their heat from one to 10. I got the pyromaniac, which was a 10. You can take the sauces to your table, or you can put them in a small container to take to your table.
With drinks, our order came to $40 which is not bad for three people.
I would definitely recommend coming here for five star experience. The place is very clean and well kept. We really enjoyed our visit there, and may go again. This was actually our second foray there and it may become a Chipotle, pancheros...
