Kermit’s earned a spot in Our State Magazine’s Top 10 hot dogs joints in the state. I’m thinking they must’ve only gone to 10 places. It’s not that Kermit’s is bad. It’s just not worthy of a top 10 hot dog designation. The hot dog itself had a good taste, and the chili did as well. But the slaw was WAY too wet. It caused the bun to liquefy and the entire thing to fall apart. The carnage was terrible. See photo. The burger also had a good flavor but also was nothing to get excited about. The tater tots were perfectly cooked and not greasy. My server was very sweet, but after she delivered my order, she never checked on me once. I actually had to go to the counter to get a refill and find out how to pay my bill. If you are going to Kermitā€˜s for nostalgia, I get that. It has that. But to me, if nostalgia is not accompanied by excellent food, what is the point? And along with that nostalgic atmosphere at Kermit’s comes the loudest phone you will ever hear. They have a to-go order phone that rings almost constantly, and even though the place is already loud, it manages to break through the noise and shatter your nerves. Kermit’s has been doing their deal since 1966. But even Dairi-O is better. Yeah, that’s right : Dairi-O. And they’ve been doing their thing since 1947. If they were avoiding chains, I understand. But Our State overlooked Johnson’s Family Grill in Madison.

I have been coming here for as long as I can remember. My dad started bringing me to this place when I was a kid and he would take me to the races. I love their Footlong Hotdog "all the way" with french fries and a drink. Me and my boyfriend, who is a professional chef, decided to get some delicious food to line our stomach because we were about to go somewhere to drink. He loved it. He sarcastically said, "omg, never bring me here again." as he shoved the rest of his Footlong in his mouth.🤭 I paid $15 and some change for 2 Footlong Hotdog meals. The service was really good too. As soon as I pulled up a really sweet country girl came out and took my order and called me "Honey" or some short little cute name we like to use in the south to call people when we don't know their name and want to be super nice. She was really sweet and service was fast. The food was delicious. The parking lot/drive was kinda confusing. It didn't seem to have a set driveway. The curb is so low it pretty much matches with the road. I drive a handicapped van that is very low. I was able to drive over what little of a curb that was there and I didn't scrape anything. I think it is just one of those kinds of places that you can just turn in where sets you up best to get in a parking spot. I have always loved this place and will keep coming back.

They don't have places like this around much anymore. You drive up and one of the waitresses will come out to take your order and then bring it to you at your car when it's ready. We tried the regular hot dog, a 1/4 lb beef one, and a cheese dog which is topped with pimento cheese. We had the regular and beef with mustard, slaw and chili. The regular was the best... and was very, very good. The beef one, the hot dog was tasty but didn't have much snap and the bun was too much bread. The pimento cheese one was fun to try but if you just want a great hot dog skip it and go regular. We also got B&G handpies which are a local creation: cherry, apple, peach and lemon were the ones we got. My husband grew up with these pies and was thrilled to revisit his childhood by having them again. The waitstaff are super nice and very efficient. Bring cash!

IF YOU ARE BLACK, do not eat here!! I literally came from here 3:13 pm 7/21/16 and my cheeseburger was nasty as hell ! And the owner is a redneck who i bet hates blacks to a oblivion and ironically Kermits sits in Waughtown and if you are familiar with Winston Salem , this is a predominately black/mexican area. I ordered my burger with Emily and the redheaded owner butted in and named the ingredients i can have! There was no type of greeting , no "hello", no "welcome to Kermits" and when i asked him to repeat what he said he ignored me. So i named off what i wanted. Well i get my flat chested(3.95 cent) burger and it was missing onions. I gave it back to Emily and she walked it to one of the food prep guys and they chuckled , and the cook made a sharp glance at me then they both laughed and he threw a handful of onions on my burger and gave it back. They also DO NOT USE GLOVES WHEN PREPARING FOOD . i took that sorry thing called a cheeseburger home and when i opened it up , there was enough onions on there to fry a freaken omelette! Bottom line is this place is nasty as hell and the owner does not like blacks! I would say "prejudice" as most whites in the southern part of the United States are , especially North Carolina. The food here is not worth it. If anything , go to Dairy-O's , Five-Guys or even Burger King. If managenent/ owners hate a certain group of people, expect that hate to flow down to the employees. Stay away from this place unless you want mediocre food. Its not...
