I enjoyed the food here. The service was just a tad bit slow, but the place was full so I can't really complain. It did take a pretty long time to get our drinks, a soda and a malta.
I ordered the mofongo appetizer and pork chops with white rice and black beans on the side. The prices are good and the portions we're decent. The one thing I can say is that they do not over season their food, which is good, but if your the typical Puerto Rican like I am, then you probably season the hell out of your dishes; they don't. Some spots end up serving pretty salty dishes, but they make it just right.
I wasn't overly impressed with the decor or the food, but ots not repulsive, just a little dated. I would go back and try other dishes. The table across from me had a large party and every single person ordered the breaded bistec, which was HUGE! I regretted ordering my chuletas because the bistec looked THAT good.
The mofongo was small, soft and moist. I'm used to mofongo that is a little drier with crunchy bits of chicharon, but there's wasn't too bad. They served it with some kind of clear liquid that I never heard of before, but it didn't seem to add anything to the mofongo. The pork chops we're deep fried, so if you've had deep fried pork chops before then you've had these... Nothing special and possibly unseasoned or very minimally seasoned. The black beans were the hilight for me. They we're really good and packed lots of flavor.
My wife had mofongo and an order of pollo fricase, which she said was good but not really flavorful. She would also come back and try something else.
As I mentioned, the decor is a bit dated, but the overall feel of the place was warm and I felt like I was in an old friend's house dining. The smell of the food reminded us of when we were younger and mom's cooking up a storm for the holidays -- the aroma of the cooking is instant nostalgia!
The waitress we had was very nice and overall, the entire staff was attentive to their tables while taking care of business. The view we had was of a giant flat screen TV which was showing a video of Puerto Rico, which I found thoroughly entertaining while waiting for our food. No audio, just aerial shots of various places in PR, but my island is beautiful and I loved every second of it. I could sit in the same seat and watch the same video everytime I go there if I had to.
Overall, it's not a bad place to get some PR'n cookin'. Prices are good, service is okay, food isn't bad. I'd recommend it, but wouldn't go if I was looking to impress someone. Its more like a decent...
Read moreHours are posted as opening at 9am. Got here five minutes before to a closed restaurant and lights off. Waited a little after 9 and noticed the server running in and rushing inside. I waited 10 more minutes before coming in. Knowing that it looks like a rough start I ask ahead of time if everything on the menu was available to which we were told yes absolutely. To keep it simple we order sandwiches and the sampler appetizer. The appetizer was hot and delicious. However the sandwiches were sloppily put together and were missing certain toppings because according to the server their prep lady had just come in a couple minutes ago (it is now 5til 10am) and had nothing ready. So again I ask if they’re certain everything is available. Again she responds oh yes yes it’s just none of the vegetables are prepped or cut for the sandwiches. So I say ok, so you have soup today correct? She says yes. So I order a soup. She then says well that’s not ready either. If you want, pay for it now and you can come back this afternoon for it. For a place that opens at 9am and repeatedly says everything is available after being asked multiple times but in fact they are not, isn’t very professional. It’s unfortunate that I traveled almost an hour to eat here because of the great reviews to only see and feel as though it’s all a scam and lie. I gave it a 2 star because the sampler was atleast hot and fast but again it’s all frozen so that’s that.
I’d recommend having their kitchen staff come in earlier to prep and have everything ready to go for when they open. Or change your hours to the afternoon if no one is a morning person and can’t make it to...
Read moreFirst let me start by saying I really wanted to like this place. My friend recommended this restaurant to me because she knows that I love love love conch and they offer a conch salad. Drove there after work to get my seafood salad, while there I decided to just get food for the whole family(spent $135). I gave a 2 rating for service because the wait time was ridiculous but the lady who took my order was pleasant. They finally bring the food to me and helped me out to my car because it was too much for me to carry. Luckily I'm a person who always checks my orders before I leave. I WAS SOOOO DISAPPOINTED IN WHAT I WAS SEEING. They served me my food in the smallest containers. When I opened the bowl (yes I said bowl) they were 2 pieces of chicken with 1 piece of potato and carrot ( I will post pics) I went back in and let them know I wasn't accepting that and they needed to fix it..... everybody immediately started speaking to each other in Spanish. The lady who I assumed was the owner or manager never said a word to me she just signaled to the other lady to take the food to the back. Anyways they somewhat redeemed themselves (OR SO I THOUGHT) The main reason I went there in the first place, conch salad, WAS HORRIBLE!!!!! It was tasteless. All I tasted was lime and oil!!! The chicken and pork chops I ordered were so dry nobody finished eating their food. In one of the reviews someone said the cook needs to go to school and learn how to cook and I whole heartedly agree. I was especially disappointed with the pork chops cause that plate was $30, the conch was $30 as well. They don't have to ever worry about seeing...
