I dined there on 1/11/2025. Unfortunately, due to the treatment of my disabled sister and I, this will be our first and only experience at 1929 Pizza in Edwardsville.
To start, the handicap paths were not cleared enough of snow to allow her power chair access to get to the entrance. I asked if they had a shovel and was told, “no”.
Not one employee offered assistance!
Two men in our party of 7 had to kick snow out of the way to widen the path just enough to drive her chair through. Then, we had to go through a different entrance to come in a side door to the restaurant. It was so embarrassing and the entire restaurant was watching as if we were their entertainment.
My sister and I finally arrive to the table and as I’m getting her situated, the server is at the tail end of his spiel and my sister and I didn’t hear any of it; as if, we didn’t matter…I asked for a chair to sit her extra items in and was completely ignored. So, of course, I had to accommodate myself.
Dinner was fine; although, you have to ask for everything. For example, we asked for crushed red pepper and we were given a ramekin with approximately 6 flakes or possibly an 1/8 of a teaspoon. To paint the picture, we have a party of 7…so, when the server returned, I asked for at least 6 pinches of red pepper, lol. I had no choice but to laugh, at this point. Oh, and I forgot to mention, the server’s spiel, was informing us that we HAVE to eat family style for a party of 7 or more. Cost was in excess of $400 and 4 of the 7 had 2 alcoholic drinks each…EXPENSIVE!!! Oh, and none of us know if we double tipped the server or not, because we were unclear on whether or not the tip was included. They just brought us food, we had no idea what was coming out. Again, food was fine, but very poor explanation…as none of us knew what we were getting (even the one’s that heard the server’s explanation). Also, during family style dining, you are first served appetizers, then salad, then pizza, and lastly, a cannoli. You would think they would supply you with a clean plate after each round, but, no, we had to ask for that, too…That is, after we were thoroughly disgusted by scraping our plates off in a community bowl that we had on the table.
To end the night, again, no assistance for my sister and we had to ask customers to move so we could exit the side entrance.
To the management at 1929 Pizza, know that handicap people are people too and train your staff to treat ALL people with respect and dignity.
We will not be back; however, I hope you take time to educate yourself and your team on ADA law that protects people with disabilities and...
Read moreO M G This is going to be long winded - but SOOO deserving... An amazing pizza and wine spot that knocks it out of the park, the neighborhood and the state! My only complaint is this is 40 miles from me...although my butt could not handle being closer...I'm popping buttons already after the beet and olive bruschetta, Caesar salad, sausage and pepper pizza and canoli, oh but don't forget like 4 glasses of delicious wines (yeah, tried multiples, because why not!) I loved seeing such a different bruschetta offering and it looks like that's a special and this changes, so excited to see what the next one is. The Caesar salad was baby romaine tossed in the most delicious home made dressing and topped with roasted bread crumbs. Let's get to the pizza...I knew when we walked in from the crowded tables and smell in the air this was a home run, but then saw pizzas being delivered to the tables and almost cried. I looked at my hubby and we both knew THIS was going to be the pizza place to end them all. I don't get the love of cracker dough and provel and thankfully neither does 1929!!! This place takes pride and time in creating the bread and dough here and man does it show. The crust had beautiful bubbles that they know better not to pop and parts of this beautiful pie gets a little charred from their expertly cooked pizza whisperer who monitors that wood fired oven Perfectly seasoned homemade sausage, bursts of tomato bites, the right amount of mozzarella lay on top of the most wonderful chewy, crisp pillowy crust. No joke, I wanted to stand up and start clapping, throw streamers and cry at the same time. We met the owners and turned into giddy children in the presence of greatness. Make a reservation, because they sell out! We didn't have one and he was gracious to give us a table, but he ran out after we got there, so will reserve the next time we go because we want like 4 pizzas and that wasn't possible that night. Obviously we will be back and will bring an army of NON provel lovers. 🩵 Update: Have been twice more, once having a birthday party and tried family style, so fun, highly recommend, and again for a going away party. At this point we've tried every pizza but 1! Continuously delicious and fresh! The crust and toppings are just...
Read more1929 opened with instant popularity. The owner is great and very personable on Instagram and has built a great following. Which means they fill-up their tables fast and you'll most likely have to wait, if you do not get there early.
The night I went, I was there when the doors opened and within a half hour it was packed and had a waitlist. Since I was dining alone, I offered to sit at the bar to keep their tables available. I like the industrial feel of the dining room and the open kitchen. It's kinda cool to see your salad and pizza being made from your table.
I enjoyed a glass of Portlandia, a red blend from Oregon, to accompany my Caesar salad and Pepperoni pizza. It was what the menu paired with my pizza. The salad wasn't a typical Caesar, instead of chopped Romaine, it was made with large whole hearts of Romaine. Some would complain that they'd have to cut it into bite size pieces, but it didn't bother me. I also liked how they use breadcrumbs instead of traditional croutons. However, the house made dressing needs to be tweaked. It needs more anchovy flavor and for me personally, I'd love to see some white anchovies as a garnish.
The star of my meal was definitely the pizza. It's a traditional red sauce, topped with salami, pepperoni and house made mozzarella. I ate half at the bar and took the remainder home for next day lunch. Reheating it in the air fryer, it was just as tasty.
The service was a little bumpy, but once they get their sea legs, I think they'll be fine. Opening a new restaurant will have its bumps. They've got their main attraction, pizza mastered. Now they can focus on customer service.
I will return to enjoy a, Four Cheese or Sausage and...
