Avenel BBQ — Restaurant in Woodbridge Township

My teenage son and had just finished watching a show at the Avenel Performing Arts Center. We decided to go for a walk to explore Avenel since this was our first time visiting this part of New Jersey. As we were walking we felt hungry and saw a black sign by the side of the road that said, “Avenel BBQ, Churrasqueira, Portuguese Cuisine and decided to check out this low-key Mom and Pop-style Portuguese restaurant. Sofia, the very kind and friendly lady behind the counter welcomed us and all others who entered the restaurant with a warm and sunny huge smile. She took our order of a house salad, pork ribs, red beans in sauce, yellow rice with peas, carrots, cauliflower and black olives as well as chocolate fudge cake. The portions were generous and all the food was absolutely delicious! We are really glad we found this restaurant! I recently visited this incredible Portuguese restaurant in New Jersey, and I’m blown away! Their chicken, rice, and vegetables are simply outstanding – the best I’ve had in the state, hands down. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and tender, the rice was flavorful and cooked to perfection, and the vegetables were fresh and delicious.

The portions were generous, and the authenticity of the flavors transported me straight to Portugal. On top of the amazing food, the service was warm and welcoming, making the whole experience even better.

NEVER AGAIN! Ordered 2 full trays (1 beef rib & 1 full chicken) for nearly $60. Literally received 3 beef ribs with barely any meat on them maybe enough rice for 1 person and super cold and disgusting friend. The chicken was definitely not a “whole” chicken absolutely dry. After calling and letting them know my concerns, they asked me to “text” a number the pictures of my order. I get a call back from the business a few minutes later to say, yes, that’s a full tray of food and it’s ideally only for 1 person. $60 worth of food wasn’t even enough to feed my 2 kids? The owner didn’t even have the audacity to speak to me directly. Horrible experience....
