This is a magical place. I’ve been here many, many times over the years and each time is fantastic. They have the best diner food around (diner food = large platters of pretty much everything in the American diet, all the time). Their diner food is special, as it includes vegan options, as well. And, not just “a salad”, but a WHOLE SECTION of the menu with more selections than most other entire vegan restaurants have. And, they are all different and all DELICIOUS. I love this place because I can get tasty food from the vegan menu and my dad, friends, etc, can get surf and turf or a hamburger or whatever else they choose and we both leave happily satisfied. The staff is friendly (including Chef George), it’s clean, they have incredible desserts, parking is plenty (despite being always busy), they have a typical diner counter, plus booths, and also tables by windows and a large room that can be used for big parties. Also, lots of people enjoy this place, so it’s likely you may happen to see some friends or family, too! The prices run about $15-20 for an entree, but the portions are big and it sure beats cooking. I’ve had breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, & late night food there and it’s all excellent. Favorites are the Colonial Skillet, Vegan Pancakes, Seitan Poutine (best with sweet potato fries), Seitan Reuben, and the Seitan Wings. They also have a ‘Market’ Menu where you can get a pint or quart of a sauce or ingredient and DIY at home.

So this am I treated my daughter to the diner. Everything from the time I arrived was going great. My waitress was awesome. I even tipped her very generously to let her know how much we appreciated her. As I had an eggshell in my French Toast. I ate maybe 2 slices, by the third, there lied the piece of eggshell. I let the waitress know. She was very apologetic and said she would tell the manager and have it removed from the bill. After locating and discussing with her/him ( I don’t know because they never came out like most restaurants) the waitress apologized and said the manager said it must have been at the bottom of the plate. It will not be removed from the bill. I am blown away at this response because i should not have had an eggshell on my plate at all. I was very bothered about that. I didn’t make a big deal. I just paid and left. I do feel like this should have been handled very differently. I’m never one to complain but I felt like I wasn’t given the best service. I go to this diner often and sadden that today’s visit was nothing like usual. Stacey, you were great!! However the manager needs to do better!!!!

Passing through Woodbury when we decided to visit the Colonial...a place we ate at a lot 20 years ago. The place looks good...better than it used to. The same can't be said for the food. We went for some chicken noodle soup, the French dip, and a turkey club (both came with fries). The FD was better than the club, but the fries were a bit underdone and cold upon arrival. The soup was incredibly salty, and also cold. The service was lacking. Not much energy from the staff. They spent more time standing around talking to one another than they did waiting on patrons. The woman next to us went our entire meal waiting for the waitress to return...she received the wrong order. Last comment - when I eat in some place, I don't want to be served in plastic. Bringing Au Jus for French Dip in 2 plastic cups is somewhere between lazy, careless, and/or cheap. Why not serve the meal on paper plates? It's the same experience. All in all...as reflected in the ratings (which I considered marking lower)...a very average meal.

Upon arriving there was no wait, which was a plus. Our waitress was attentive and eager to take our drink and food order, another plus. However, that’s where the positivity of our dining experience ends with this establishment. The food was mediocre at best with the exception of the crab bisque. The seafood combination platter lacked flavor and the flounder was over cooked to mush. My husband had the shrimp and scallop Angelica and his scallops had a gritty texture as if they weren’t cleaned properly. The food could have possibly been overlooked and I probably wouldn’t have even done a review had the young “lady” (if you can call her that) who settled our check not been SO rude. We constantly heard her complain behind the counter prior to checking out. At one point she made the comment “I just can’t stand ignorant people” in reference to a customer, to the manager or owner or whomever the tall heavy set gentleman was behind the counter to which he replied “sometimes you just gotta let it roll off your back.” While checking us out, she was loud and obnoxious, slammed the pen on the counter for us to sign our receipt, snatched my husbands card out of the machine and shoved it in his hand while saying “here!” We then watched her snatch a mask from behind the counter and push past us to accost a patron sitting in the lobby waiting. She then very rudely shoved the mask in his face demanding that he wear it (the gentleman was already wearing a shield) She kept repeatedly saying here! Here! Wear it! My husband was excited to come home to New Jersey after being gone since 1994 and eating at this establishment....he was excited to take me to a local spot, and unfortunately, it was just an awful experience. We plan to bring our children to New Jersey in the summer but most certainly will mark this place off as somewhere to visit. If I could make a few suggestions, it would be these: it is VERY unsanitary for servers to have two inch long artificial nails, I would have them cut their nails down. Also, I would suggest that your hostess wear something she can actually work in appropriately. Her dress was so short and tight you could see her entire butt when she leaned over a table, also I would have the same hostess pull her hair back because it’s also unsanitary to have freely moving hair that long inside of a restaurant. She should concern herself more with customer service and interpersonal skills and less with trying to be the...

Our first and only visit was for dinner on 12/26. We had a new server and she was extremely pleasant. The food was also very good. I had ordered a French onion soup that never arrived, so I just asked for it to be removed from the check. Apparently, the hostess wasn't familiar with how to remove an item from a check, so it took a good 15-20 minutes for us to get the check. That's when the second problem started. One of the people in our party ordered the eggplant parm entree, which he received and enjoyed. The check showed eggplant parm with shrimp. It wasn't what he ordered, nor what he received...so we asked to have the check corrected. After another 15 minutes, the hostess came over to ask about the situation, stating very loudly that our server told her that we ordered the eggplant parm and shrimp. We assured her we not only didn't order the shrimp version, but we didn't receive the shrimp version either. The hostess then said, "We'll have to check the video cameras to see what you actually received. We've had some shysters in here." A number of other patrons turned around at this point to see what was going on. When we explained to her that we definitley did not order nor receive the shrimp version of the entree, and that loudly suggesting that they would have to check camera footage in case we are "shysters" probably wasn't a great business practice, she then told us that she usually doesn't work there...she was just covering for someone. Then she said she would adjust the check accordingly and she apologized. After another 10 minutes, we asked the status of the check and she said the server was supposed to bring it back to us. The server then brought it back and the adjustment was not made. At that point, we just wanted to get out of there, so we paid the check and left extremely upset. Before we left the table, the woman at the table behind us apologized to us because she was a longtime customer and couldn't believe what she just heard. Needless to say, we will NEVER go back to the Colonial Diner. If the owner or manager would like more info, please DM me on Facebook (I left the same review on your Facebook page) and I'll supply my cell number. With all the positive reviews and personal referral we received to try this place out, I can't imagine that you want your establishment...

My husband and I literally love the diner. I promise you weekly we spend at least $200 or more at this place. We order at least 3 times a week. You can confirm this by looking up my orders via the phone number. Staff is very nice but it was disappointing having the manager tell me today and the last time I ordered which was literally a few days ago that its an inconvenience to the kitchen to request for avocado and onions and peppers to be added to my sandwich and home fries when im more than willing to pay extra. You advertise breakfast all day and I requested to add a pint of grits in the instructions because its not available online to select and I was told its after 11am and the grits are done. Kat the manager very nice but she advised me as a customer this is the last time she will allow me to request items to be added even when im already fine with paying extra for it. She explained to me her boss is on her back about fulfilling good loyal paying customers request to add extras. I mean im only requesting items to be added that the restaurant already advertise having. Im not asking for anything that they have to go out their way to create. But im told my request is too much for the kitchen to handle. How do you handle ppl with food allergies? Are they told all well sorry we can't serve you or like I was told "Okay we can do it for you this this time but next time we wont be able to". Thats so disappointing and discouraging for customers like myself to want come back. It doesn't feel welcoming at all and then it's uncomfortable feeling that you are fulfilling my request this time but you really don't want to . I hope the owner really takes heed to my complaint because I hate to separate my relationship with this diner. We absolutely...
