My wife and I were up in the Pisgah National Forest area hiking all day and were traveling back home when she announced she was hungry. I said ok find a place and she did!
We love barbque to begin with so when this restaurant popped up on a Google search we decided to try it! Walking in we thought it was a "find a table, sit down, look over the menu and wait for a server to come take your order - WRONG! 🤣
While sitting at our table we noticed other people come inside, go up to the register and order!
NOTE TO MANAGEMENT: put up a sign that says: "ORDER HERE" at the registers! 😜
So we ordered! I got the pulled pork platter and my wife got to smoke chicken platter. For sides I got the baked beans and the mac and cheese, my wife got the baked beans and coleslaw. Both orders came with cornbread.
Let me say when we were talking to the male employee behind the register my wife asked him if we "ordered here" and he said "Yes". She said okay we thought we were supposed to sit down to have her order taken. This is our first time here and she began laughing. He smiled and said "Well welcome to our restaurant"! When we completed our orders which included drinks (Diet Pepsi - no Coke products, sorry! 😒) he said "Because you were first time guest, the drinks are on us!" I thought that was very nice!
We sat back down at our table and in a very timely manner our food was brought out to us (See photos!) Everything was delicious! The size portions were appropriate for most part. My wife's chicken was good - I tried it and she liked my pulled pork. My Mac and cheese was good, my baked beans were great! And let me say that they're cornbread which is sweet cornbread is out of this world delicious!
The atmosphere of the restaurant was typical Western North Carolina barbecue restaurant atmosphere, very homey and very interesting. The restrooms were clean! And apparently somebody at the restaurant is a fan of "A Christmas Story" (one of my favorite Christmas movies) because there was a life size "leg lamp" near the cash registers!
Out meals and tip ran a little over $35 but remember we got our drinks for free. In today's inflation field world I guess that's not too bad for a sit-down meal of good food.
If you're ever in the area and craving barbecue I do recommend you look up this restaurant and give it a try. We will...
Read moreAfter doing an exhaustive study of EVERY BBQ joint within 30 miles of Asheville, eating at least 2 lunches at each (one had to be ribs); I have found the undeniable BEST Q in the entire area. I spent over 4 months eating my way through every Q joint around. To qualify for this lofty honor, the meat had to be consistently moist, juicy and fall off the bone tender. In addition to that, the sides had to be exceptional; and the Bbq sauce tangy and finger licking good.
My choice for the best Q in WNC is Moe's Original BBQ. They are hands down, by far...the Best! The meat each time met the criteria set above, and was, in fact, the Only bbq that met all those criteria. There wasn't a bit of fat on the ribs, and a generous portion of meat on each bone. The sides are literally mind blowing! While every other joint in town does a fair job at best on pretty unappetizing sides - Moe's takes their food so seriously that the sides rival the Q in quality. Each day Moe's makes 6-8 NEW sides. A couple of my favorites are the squash casserole and the spiced apples, but Whatever sides you choose, your palette is in for a delightful surprise! Rounding out the experience is a rustic Q-style setting and great blues and big band music, setting the perfect ambience. From NOLA to St Louis to KC and Memphis, I've found Moe's to be the best of the best. Look no further. Slip into Moe's to satisfy your BBQ jones, and nothing else will ever satisfy your Q craving again. It's...
Read moreWow! Just noticed the MASS of LOCAL GUIDE reviews. The negatives show up when you scroll to 'just people'. Even some LG's mention lousy service, blah foods and still give 5 stars. Weird, huh? WELL...I LIVE here on MERRIMON. I called tonight. The extremely rude phone person said when I asked about tofu bc I was told they didn't have it on a prev. call ..WE ALWAYS have tofu...maybe you called some other restaurant?!! No, I said. I said I am sitting at Beaver Lake (ALL LOCALS know that's 1/4 m from Moe's), I KNOW where I am calling and called. She said again I must be calling the wrong restaurant..etc. AMAZING. I guess this person KNOWS exactly what every person who answers the phone at Moes SAYS. AND she wants to PROVE SHE's RIGHT ....with a customer. She said some other pompous stuff. I am willing to bet whoever answered the phone prevly was dealing with a supply glitch and speaking to that. But in HER mind, she had to be right instead of accepting an order. I thought..WOW..your boss should know...see. Hey owner, train your staff not take out their issues with potential customers. I went to Louellas. Could have been Iron and Oak. All the board members who wanted Louellas at an event recently WERE right. So much for...
