Searched out this chain after the Pepe's in Harwood Heights closed at the start of COVID-19. Located a few Mexican restaurants in that area, but none came close to the flavors we enjoyed for many years. The dinner portions at this location are generous with plenty of condiments to satisfy everyones taste. We enjoyed the steak fajitas that was cooked to perfection with just the correct amount of Mexican seasonings. However, the beef pieces were too thick and wide and could not be bitten through, which caused the flour tortilla to melt in your hand. The chips were very tasty, but the salsa was too watery, and the serving of salsa did not taste like salsa. The salsa receipt MUST be adjusted so the salsa will cling a bit to the chip with the correct portion of onion, tomato cilantro, etc. IMO, the salsa was lacking tomato flavor and needed ripe tomato pieces or diced tomato 🍅 to get the tomato flavor into the salsa. As a matter of fact, we rejected the salsa and had it removed from the table. We decided that the chips were so good that we scooped the refried beans on the chips and used the green chili sauce (which was also too watery) for the Mexican flavor. The salsas should be thicker, almost like a thin chutney; since we use the salsa to enjoy the chips and enhance the other food portions on the plate. Please correct the salsa consistency so the customers can get the...
Read moreI am bummed. Something has happened to the ingredients I grew up with and look forward to from Pepe's. The beans, rice and chips all have an unusual and apparent orange color, not sure why but not at all like it used to be.
Their tostadas used to be on a tortilla that could hold up for days. These turned mushy as soon as we got them home & live 5 mins away.
Instead of the tasty white salty mexican crumble cheese on the beans, tacos and toatada, they used finely shreded white and orange cheese that turn into a melty blob and the lettuce & tomato so wet the tacos & tostadas were soggy & the lettuce wilted.
I had to deconstruct almost everything & crispen up the soggy tacos & tostada shells in the airfryer to salvage what I could.
When my carry out order was rung there was also a substantial service charge added. Wth?
I ate this food growing up on the south side of Chicago & weas so appy to have a Pepe's this close to me after moving to Woodridge 20 years ago.
Since covid the food has changed and the ingredients that made Pepe's unique gone. Sadly that's my last time to Woodridge. Going to go back to the Palos location to see if they are the same as they used to be or are serving orange, soggy & blobby ingredients too. Sad sad to...
Read moreI ordered from DoorDash at 12pm January 2nd. Unfortunately, there was no option for extra ranchera sauce on the side. So, I immediately called and asked if they could add ranchera sauce on the side to my DoorDash order. The young lady said we have to charge for it and it has to be done through DoorDash. I then told her it wasn’t a DoorDash option. I said I’ll pay for the sauce separately with a credit card. She then proceeds to tell me, I can’t take cards over the phone. I told her I was sick and couldn’t come in the pick up, but really wanted the sauce please. I told her I’d pay whatever she wanted. She then said I can’t give you the sauce unless you come pay here. I asked to speak to a manager and she says call back at 5pm. I was trying to order for lunch not dinner I told her. I then said I want to cancel my order if you can’t simply help a customer whose family owned a Pepe’s and was a customer for over 40 years. She then got very rude to me and said that’s to bad. I asked her what her name was, and she proceeded to hang up on me. Unfortunately, I will never eat at Pepe’s again. And I had to immediately cancel a $50 order because of her just out of principle. So sad that one can’t accommodate a person who is sick and can’t...
