My husband & I both ordered the smaller cut of prime rib, medium; substituting our salads for Cole slaw & the traditional baked potato (in our eyes). When our meals came, my husband's prime rib came rare & mine came medium well, which I never in a million years did I ever think my husband would even eat his steak like that, but he said it actually tasted good (?), so not to make a fuss because he doesn't like when I do that, I just decided to eat my steak even though I don't care for well done meat of any sort! But the waitress stopped at our table to drop off the extra butter I requested, and I was holding a piece of my meat against my husband's making the comment (not directly to her because I didn't know she was there) that we both ordered our steaks done the same way & she just sat the butter on the table & that was the last we saw of her until it was time to pay the bill. All I can say is thank God that we had certificates that we got for Christmas, and that my husband only had to pay less then $3 for the difference, because it was not a welcoming feeling, not a very good waitress, and I was really disappointed with the service. I have gone to Coomb's various times throughout my years, and always enjoyed the service & the meal, but tonight made up my mind...never again. People on a fixed income can't afford that type of service and food not served the way it...
Read moreIf you like expensive tasteless food, then this is the place for you! What I thought would be a delicious meal for #RWYork was less than decent. To be fair, the calamari appetizer was great ... and that was the highlight. We nearly finished the appetizer before my 1st beer arrived ... yes, calamari with dynamite sauce and no beverage. Then we learned that the other appetizer we ordered was delivered to another table ... sorry, could we wait while they made another? Fine ... until our steaks arrived prior to the "remade" app. Oh and did I say those steaks arrived before our salads! In fact, our salads never arrived... at all! On to the steaks, no salt and pepper seasoning (a minimum for beef) on any. And well undercooked ... if you want medium rare, order at least medium, maybe even medium well. And dont look for a nice sear ... you can create your own with a lighter. Smartly we asked for them to be cooked a bit more and (no kidding) they were back on the table within 3 minutes. Dessert was next ... oops wrong cake delivered to the table. Off to get the true order ... a cheesecake with absolutely no topping. No steak seasoning, no seasoning on the sides, and no topping for the dessert. We voted ... no revisit for us...

First of all you have to understand this is a neighborhood place. It has a lot of locals that come here regularly – it can often be crowded and noisy during peak periods. Parking can sometimes be a problem too – so be prepared for that.
Coombs tavern isn’t a fancy schmancy joint – it is a local bar – they have good food, it is reasonable.
We like it here, sometimes you don’t want to eat at a fancy place, you want a good meal and some good drinks at a good price. We bring the family here and there is usually something for everyone.
They have a nice diverse menu without too many options – standard, steak, chicken, seafood, pasta and soups and salads - Usually a few daily specials, and some drink creations too. All done very well – never a complaint.
Recently I had the fried chicken, when it came – 4 pieces! – it was huge! – I didn’t think I could eat it all, but it was SO good somehow I managed (highly recommend)
We have eaten here more times than I can count because it is so reliable and consistent – we will continue to eat here for the...
