The good: Service was prompt.
The bad: Cajun food?? Not hardly. Red beans and rice: Dry as a bone. Tasted like the cook dumped the paprika & red pepper/cayenne in by the metric ton. Sausage that was worst tasting than a boiled hotdog. Cajun Red Beans and Rice is cooked with Andouille; not whatever crap that was. Sides: Corn and corn. Tasted like straight dumped out of the can and microwaved. No butter, no seasoning. And again dry. Only upside was the fried gator... Oh yeah, NOPE OUT of that option.
It had been a while since the last time that we tried this place, & its still the same if not worse. Suggestions from someone who grew up south of I-10/New Orleans / Lafayette: Proper seasoning of the "cajun" red beans & rice don't just dump a ton of paprika & red pepper and call that cajun seasoning. Use actual andouille sausage (not whatever the crap that you are currently using). And cook the beans thoroughly, like actually simmer them all day. Beans are NOT meant to be firm when being eaten. Gumbo is made with meat (a combination of chicken, andouille, and/ or shrimp, crab), okra, the holy trinity (celery, onion, and bell pepper all sautéed), tomatoes (depending on how you are raised), chicken/shrimp stock, & filé which is added to a nice dark caramel roux. Then cooked at a nice simmer for hours, like all day. (Note: carrots? Not in gumbo, unless you're a yankee). Not sure if I'll ever try this again, considering the cost of an inedible entrée/side and taste buds that are currently absolutely revolted over the abuse. Best of luck to you, if you are "brave" enough...
Read moreWe went to the big easy for my grandfather's birthday dinner, we will never go again. We had 2 entree that where horrible, one was an etouffee that was bland, un-spicy, and did not taste like etouffee in any description of the dish. The other was a platter with etouffee (just as bad as the first) and red beans and rice, which was cold and bland, the 3rd dish on the platter was a small bowl of gumbo. Sadly 3rd times the charm was not the case as it was, as the rest of the dishes, cold and bland. We pointed out all of the faults to our waitress who cut us off continuously in our sentences and took the food back and agreed to discount the dish. However possibly the most infuriating part of the evening (even with the horrible food) was the bill, which after the discounts and deductions, turned to be $165, for this price we suggest going to trappers, it is the same price for 10 times better food. Needless to say we will not be returning to the restaurant, and I advise that all seeking the taste of cajun...
Read moreGrew up eating here and it used to be phenomenal. Tonight we ended up in Yukon and decided to stop by for the étouffée. Service was… not great. And the food was disappointing. It seemed like our waitress was also bartending but then several times all the waitstaff was behind the host stand together. The area by the bar was FREEZING cold and we overheard a waiter letting the couple next to us know they have no way of changing it.
They weren’t that busy but it took 20ish minutes for our food to come, and then it all came lukewarm/cold like it had been sitting for a while. Both plates had good flavor but were really not fresh and hot. We were afraid to even try to tell the waitress this because it took another 20 minutes and asking three times for her to come back with butter for the bread. Overall disappointing especially at this price point ($17 a plate plus). It’s not what it used to be.
ETA: it definitely made us both very sick to our stomachs. So I guess bonus,...
