Morning Dew is a charming restaurant in Hanoi known for its commitment to showcasing the depth of Vietnamese culinary traditions, among which the "Five-Colored Rice" or "Xôi Ngũ Sắc" is a standout dish. This dish is not only a feast for the palate but also a visual treat, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Vietnam, particularly the influence of its ethnic minority groups.
Five-Colored Rice at Morning Dew is crafted using natural ingredients to color the rice, each hue representing an element of the Vietnamese belief system, which ties into the balance of the natural world. Here’s a breakdown of the colors and their sources:
Red Rice: This vibrant color traditionally symbolizes luck and is achieved by using Gac fruit (baby jackfruit), which is not only colorful but also rich in beta-carotene and antioxidants.
Green Rice: Green signifies growth and healing. It is derived from pandan leaves or young, fragrant leaves of local plants, giving the rice a subtle, sweet aroma and flavor.
Yellow Rice: Symbolizing wealth and royalty, turmeric is used to achieve this golden hue, adding a warm, earthy flavor and anti-inflammatory properties.
Purple/Black Rice: This color often represents mystery and knowledge. It's usually obtained from magenta plant leaves or black rice, which is high in anthocyanins, helping to protect against heart disease.
White Rice: White rice stands for purity and is the natural color of rice, serving as a neutral base that ties the other flavors together.
Morning Dew serves this dish with a variety of accompaniments like sesame seeds, mung beans, and grated coconut, or it can be paired with savory items such as braised pork or chicken. This dish is not just a meal but a celebration of harmony and diversity, reflecting the essence of Vietnamese culture and the meticulous care in traditional cooking methods. Enjoying this meal offers a sensory experience into the cultural heritage of Vietnam, making it a must-try for both locals and...

Unfortunately today (29/10) my experience wasnt great other than that. I was seated on the second floor, the interior was nice. I have asked whether buffalo skin in the salad was crispy. The young male clerk didnt understand and called his coworker (a female wearing glasses) but she couldn't understand my question either. That's totally fine, I have translated my question. They both nodded and said 'yes' so that is what I ordered. As they were walking away they both laughed, which to be fair, could have been circumstantial. I got the salad, the skin wasn't crispy at all, it was quite the opposite. I didn't like it. It is a shame because if I knew what it was, I would have ordered something else and my experience would have probably been far better.
I wanted to ask for the bill but the female clerk didn't pay any attention to me. The manager noticed my nod immediately.
After having paid the check, I got almost 200.000 change back from the female clerk in 10.000 note bills which was inconvenient.
It is a shame how one employee can ruin your experience at...
Read moreThis place was okay, at best. We came for lunch at 11:45Am without a reservation and were told they were fully booked, even though all the tables were empty. We were offered a table on the balcony in 55 degrees Fahrenheit and took it because this place had such good reviews. I asked if any of the lunch reservations would be at 1Pm because we could be quick with our time there and they said no. However, after we ordered a few things they finally let us sit inside. We ordered the half chicken, rainbow sticky rice, salmon salad, and two hot teas. The salmon was delicious, truly fresh and sweet, and the salad was delicious. The rainbow rice was also good. Other than that, the rest was not great. We waited a really long time for our hot teas which were good but came out lukewarm. Now the chicken was not good at all. Some of the pieces were okay, others were really rubbery, and the flavor was fine but nothing to write home about. And when we finished our lunch at 1Pm there was still two empty tables next to ours, so it seemed like they just didn’t...
