La Cantina is a refreshing take on Mexican food and drink in Hanoi. Located at the old location of the Ginger Mexican, this restaurant has nothing to do with the previous place that occupied this address.
The chef, Carlos, a Mexican native and an experienced player in Asia (previously was the executive chef at Señor Pico’s in Bangkok), brings authentic, delicious, accessible and enjoyable food to all who wish to try.
Partner Octavio comes from a long line of Tequila and Mezcal producers and it shows in the beverage selection. If you can capture him for a chat, the conversation is absolutely scintillating.
I think it will be hard to find such good quality sipping Mezcal and Tequila anywhere else in Vietnam.
Best part? Drinks are served with complimentary spicy nuts. They’re good! Really good!
If that’s not your thing, there’s always a beer fridge stocked full of cold brew, ready for you at any moment.
Overall, I’m excited to see good food and beverage like this open in Hanoi. I’ll...

The flavours of the dipping sauces and edible flowers are ok, and beef is fine but the main dishes' ingredients seem surprisingly modest, lacking the various fresh toppings I love, not to mention the oily unevenly-crunchy chips served in a tiny chipped bowl, which are not competitive to other Mexican restaurants around. Friendly staff but expect wait time, even for the snacks (the kitchen is next door not inhouse, they only brought the sour cream when we almost finished). The restaurant only had 2-3 tables including delivery at that time, so it's not the matter of jam. It feels like they can't decide to be a finger food bar or tapas restaurant, but the design is not good for an eatery experience. Beware of the unclear branding and misleading reviews. We came so far to try it out but...
