We had lunch here a few weeks ago. Overall, the food was very tasty but the menu and waiter were almost useless in terms of providing information about the various dishes, the service was not great, the portion of mutton in our Methi Mutton was ridiculously small, and the meal did not offer good value for money.
The first thing is how little information about the dishes the menu provides both in terms of text and pictures. For example, the non-vegetarian Malwani Murgh is described as a 'Konkan specialty with an aromatic spiced coconut-based gravy' but with no indication at all in either English or Vietnamese of what meat it contains. Other descriptions are similarly confusing or useless. The Vegetable Biryani 'combo' is described as 'Long grain basmati rice with spiced veggies (so far so good) along with a Fortune bag within Its Truly’ (?!).
In terms of the service, our South Asian waiter seemed annoyed when we declined to order drinks (a few sips of water is all I need when I'm having lunch) but the prices for some of the drinks on the menu are hard to justify: Diet Coke 65k + 10% VAT and 7% service charge = 76k VND!!! Those are 5-star hotel prices! Also, our waiter was totally unable to answer any of our questions about the menu and dishes in either English or Vietnamese. For example, when I asked the waiter about the 'Fortune bag' mentioned above, he was unable to explain what it was or how this dish was a 'combo', but if I'm paying a non-optional 7% service charge, then I expect complete knowledge of all the dishes and their ingredients and an ability to convey this information fluently and confidently in English and Vietnamese. Finally, our waiter seemed to be part of the ownership or management of the restaurant (I could be wrong though) but generally speaking if I have to pay a service charge, I expect it to cover wages of locally hired staff.
The food was actually very good. Our meal came with complementary papadams and dips, and water. We ordered Vegetable Samosa, Vegetable Biryani and Methi Mutton with Butter Naan (a so-called 'combo'). The biryani was one of the best I’ve had and the Methi Mutton was also very good, but the quantity of mutton in this dish was simply unacceptable. It came with what looked like a generous portion of meat, but it was mostly just one massive piece of bone, and by the time we had pared the meat off this bone it amounted to just two reasonable-sized mouthfuls of meat, but the dish cost 180k + 10% VAT and 7% service charge...
Read moreThis was the second time l went to dine at Tanatan. Definitely one of the nicest Indian restaurant l've been to in terms of cleanliness and particular attention detail with the layout of the tables with comfortable seating. The ambiance was pleasing and played soothing Indian music in the style of a poppy electronic meditational beat. The price is also reasonable.
The food was served promptly, was not too spicy and actually delicious for our liking.
We ordered lamb and chicken. The chicken was great but the lamb lacked meat and constisted mostly of bone.
The other drawbacks was the waiter, the billing and choice of bread.
Although the service was prompt, l felt the waiter didn't respect us.
There is a lack of choice in the bread section. We asked for paratha, in which he said he had, but the bread we got was in fact naan in which he insisted was Paratha.
The first time l went there the waiter was talking so loudly on the phone, l couldn't hear what my friend was saying so asked him to speak more quietly, in which he did, for about 30 seconds.
Another surprise was the billing. There is a 7% service charge and an addition VAT charge also, so the price on the menu isn't what you will pay.
Furthermore l paid by card and made a careless mistake of not reading the cost on the POSA machine in which the waiter had already punched in the price. It wasn't until later when l got a ping from my bank, that l realized he had overcharged by about 150k. Not a big deal...
Read moreMy family and I recently visited Roti Mojo in Quan 7, Ho Chi Minh City, and it was a truly enjoyable experience. As someone who appreciates good Indian food, I was pleasantly surprised.
We started with Samosas, which were deliciously crispy. The Tandoori Chicken was a highlight, offering a unique and delightful taste.
The Tikka Paneer and Butter Chicken were exceptional. The Tikka Paneer stood out for its flavor, and the Butter Chicken was perfectly creamy and comforting.
What I particularly liked was the Naan bread. It was thinner and crisper than usual, which was a nice change and complemented the curries well.
The spices in the dishes were balanced perfectly. They added great flavor without being overwhelming, which I appreciated.
The service was commendable too, especially from Jeetgill, who was very attentive and helpful. His colleague, whose name I missed, was equally great.
My mom especially liked the dinnerware and silvware, which was a brass color and gave a hybrid fine-dining experience. All of us also liked the music.
I'd definitely recommend Roti Mojo to anyone looking for quality Indian cuisine in Ho Chi Minh City. It’s a place I’ll remember for its good food and welcoming atmosphere.
I can confidently say that it exceeded our expectations, and we plan to return on our next trip to...
