A MUST VISIT for ALL ART LOVERS IN TIRANA! Actually a hidden gem now… it deserves to be known. Besart, the son of Thanas Papa, welcomed me in the studio where numerous large-scale artworks are on display, along hundreds of small scale models, low reliefs and other interesting art things. Some sculptures are actually impossible to see elsewhere, as many of the bronze copies installed in the countries litterally disappeared through past regime change and conflict. Most of all, it is very interesting to hear Besart sharing his passion about his dad’s work, which was transmitted to him as he is also a successful artist. The story of his father is very touching and tells a lot about dark times in the history of Albania. The museum is very close to the center. In front of the building, the entrance is through the backalley on the left (I got confused at first but managed to contact the studio through social media). Maybe it is better to reserve in advance just in case, I’m not sure! If you like art, history and sculpture of course, you will be blown away but the extensive...
Read moreThis is a must visit museum in Tirana. The sculptures are incredible - there's so many of them, all very well preserved and presented in Thanas's original sculpting studio. Besart is also a fantastic tour guide and talked me through many of the sculptures, alongside his father's history and the history of Albania as a whole. There's also a few sculptures he's made, including one on the street near here, all of which are also very impressive. I've never been to a museum that felt so welcoming, it's the best thing I've seen in Tirana and if you have any interest in art it is unmissable.
The museum is quite easy to find, it's down a small side street and the entrance has a sign. I turned up without a booking and messaged Besart on the museum's Instagram, and he was graciously able to host me immediately. But I would maybe suggest you contact ahead of time and book an appointment if you're...
Read moreThe son of Thanas Papa is guiding through the studio, where His father used to create incredible sculptures. Although the artwork of Thanas Papa used to please the esthetics of the socialist regime, as it is kind of heroic, but it is also very well crafted and with the background explanations of the son you can see the individual interpretation of the artist and it appears even more impressive. The son, a sculpturer himself, shows that his øvre is by no means less important. He took plenty of time to answer all...
