Though Cape Byron was explored in the early 19th century, and construction of lighthouses on the New South Wales shore quickened in the mid 19th century, and especially in the 1870s under Colonial Architect James Barnet, a lighthouse was not constructed on the cape since it was considered clearly visible anyway. The decision to proceed with building the light was made at the end of the 1890s, and the site was levelled in October 1899.

The tower was built by James Barnet's successor, Charles Assinder Harding, who also designed Norah Head Light and Point Perpendicular Light, in a style similar to Barnet's.

Construction of the site began in July 1900 by contractors Mitchell and King. The total cost was £10,042 pounds to the contractors, £8,000 for the apparatus and lantern house, and £2,600 for the road from Byron Bay township. Adjusting for inflation, this equates to roughly $2.8M Australian dollars today.

Construction ended in 1901 and was to be celebrated on 30 November 1901 in a great banquet, with special trains carrying visitors from Lismore and Murwillumbah, at the presence of the Premier of the day, the Hon.John See, who was to arrive from Sydney in the government steamer 'Victoria'. However, bad weather delayed the ship till the following day and the banquet was held without him. The opening by the Premier took place...

The Byron Bay Lighthouse area is simply breathtaking! The view from the top of the lighthouse is spectacular and offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding coastline. The walk up to the lighthouse is a moderate hike, but it's definitely worth the effort. Along the way, you'll be surrounded by stunning scenery, including lush rainforest, cliffs, and pristine beaches. There are plenty of benches and lookout points where you can rest and take in the stunning views. The area is also a great spot for whale watching during the annual migration season. The lighthouse itself is a historical landmark and is beautifully maintained. The grounds are well-manicured, making it a perfect spot for a picnic or a relaxing stroll. There are also several cafes nearby where you can grab a coffee or a bite to eat. Overall, the Byron Bay Lighthouse area is a must-visit destination for anyone visiting the region. It's truly a natural wonder that will...

At the top of the hill are breathtaking 360d views of your surroundings. The walk along the coast was invigorating and fascinating with a wide variety of interesting flora and fauna along the way. Quite a steep climb in some places but great exercise. Loved the rugged beauty of the landscape and the calming views of the ocean. There is a cafe where you can take time to drink your coffee while soaking in on the glorious views. Can get really busy and crowded though. There is a free 30 minutes guided tour at the lighthouse. It was fantastic and informative. At the top of the lighthouse, the views are just stunning and humbling. I did wish i can look at these beautiful sights forever. There is also a telescope for a closer look of the whales and dolphins which were swimming close by. Big crowd when we visited and it took forever to find parking so probably best to walk up there if you're fit. Just a few k from the town centre. 😊

The most amazing views! This is the most easterly point in Australia. Not a huge amount of parking though at the top so go early or plan for the 45 minute walk to the lookout point. We went at lunch time & had about a 15 minute walk to the lighthouse. Well worth it of course, with views out to the ocean, of the bay & in land too. We saw dolphins & Orcas aswell, swimming just off the shore, so worth going for that alone. The area is surrounded by stunning beaches & Byron Bay itself is a busy but lovely town. We stopped for a sandwich from the cafe at the lookout & lighthouse which was nice but busy. There are toilets there also & you can arrange for a tour of the lighthouse but unfortunately we didn't have time. Possibly one of the greatest views anywhere though.

We left around 3pm from Brisbane and reached there by 5:30ish and had found a decent parking spot just 300mts away from the light house. It is the most easterly point of Australia where sunrises. We were in luck as we not only saw a beautiful play of light during the sunrises but also had the pleasure to see some dolphins crossing by playfully. The most wonderful moment was when we sat down at the Wategos point, a whale suddenly sprang out of the water turned in the air and landed onto the surface of the sea sinking in.🥰💕 Worth it.👌
