Fabulous wine tasting and Choco Vino experience!
My husband and I made a booking for Easter Sunday. We’d read about their ChocoVino experience, so we simply HAD to try it for ourselves. Larry, one of the owners of Hahndorf Hill winery, warmly welcomed us as we entered the tasting room. We were quickly seated at our table with a lovely view over the vineyard. After perusing the menu of ChocoVino experiences, we opted for the full tasting. And we were not disappointed! Dee (pictured on the home page of their website) walked us through the way we should appreciate the chocolate and wine pairings that were placed before us. Our first course was presented in a wooden ‘treasure chest’ of sorts. Opening it revealed a roasted cocoa bean, palate cleansing apple slices and two Australian produced milk chocolates, from Haighs and Daintree Estates respectively. Oh and not to forget an absolutely superb bottle of mineral water from Cape Grim in Tasmania. Also designed to be a palate cleanser, Dee regaled us with their story, of being home to the cleanest air and water on earth. I have to admit I don’t think I’ve ever taken the time to really taste chocolate. Following the instructions provided, it was quite amazing to observe the subtle flavour differences between even each of the single roasted cocoa beans we’d been given. And then to move onto the Haighs and Daintree milk chocolates, there was as big difference between them too! For our next course, dark chocolates were paired with two of their wines. Breaking with the rules you’d expect re chocolate and wine, one was paired with their unique white wine varietal Gruner Veltliner. The other was paired with their single origin Shiraz. We followed their tasting instruction of first trying the chocolate, then the wine… cleansing your palate and trying the wine then the chocolate, and thirdly trying the two almost together. We were amazed at how well their Gruner Veltliner went with the dark chocolate, truly did not expect the matching to work so beautifully on the palate! And it goes without saying that the Shiraz was also gorgeous with the chocolates chosen to match too. They encouraged us to take our time, and we spent a wonderful hour just savouring the whole experience! We will be...
Read moreI've been visiting Hahndorf Hill for many years now and it is my all time favourite winery. I have NEVER had a bad glass of wine there. Every one of their wines is an absolute classic interpretation of its style. I've been to other wineries and tried the pinot gris, or the sav blanc, or the riesling and been hard pressed to pick the intended style between the samples, as too often they were too much alike. Not so at Hahndorf Hill Wines where the wines are exquisitely crafted and true to type. The Gruner Veltliner is exceptional in that it is classified as the most food friendly wine in the world and HH does a cracking job of presenting their Gruner Veltliner. Their Shiraz Vault is a stunning gift for the wine connoisseur who has everything. I especially like their approach to the growing of their vines, with biodynamic practices. Larry is an outstanding host and if he is not there, you will still receive an outstanding experience in wine tasting from Dee or the other highly knowledgeable staff of HH wines. A jewel in the crown of the Adelaide Hills Wine Region and thoroughly...
