The Whitehouse, located in the picturesque town of Hahndorf, is nothing short of a culinary revelation. This unassuming burger joint has easily skyrocketed to the top of my list as the best burger place not just in South Australia, but quite possibly the entire country.
Upon arrival, it's clear that The Whitehouse takes pride in its award-winning hospitality. The staff are genuinely warm and welcoming, eager to offer their recommendations and ensure you have an exceptional dining experience.
The menu at The Whitehouse is small, but perfectly curated. Unlike the tacky, oversized menus found at lesser establishments, this restaurant focuses on quality over quantity. Each burger is a well-thought-out masterpiece, showcasing the skill and passion of the chef. The ingredients are fresh and locally sourced, and the balance of flavors and textures is spot-on.
For myself, the star of the show is undoubtedly their Hamburger, which is cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, and bursting with rich, robust flavor. The quality of the meat is evident in every bite, reflecting The Whitehouse's commitment to sourcing the finest local produce.
A generous layer of creamy Monterey Jack cheese is melted atop the patty, adding a smooth, velvety texture and a mild, buttery flavor that perfectly complements the beef. The addition of crispy bacon not only lends a smoky, savory element to the burger but also introduces an irresistible crunch that contrasts beautifully with the other components.
The Hamburger is further enhanced by a bed of crisp, fresh lettuce and a dollop of house-made tomato relish. The relish adds a touch of sweetness and tanginess, balancing the richness of the cheese and bacon while accentuating the natural flavors of the beef patty.
The crowning glory of this remarkable burger is the smoked paprika aioli. This unique condiment infuses the dish with a subtle smoky undertone and a gentle heat, adding depth and complexity to the overall flavor profile.
Each ingredient is carefully nestled between a pair of soft, lightly toasted butter buns that are sturdy enough to hold everything together without becoming soggy or overwhelming the other components.
The outdoor dining area, nestled beneath lush trees, provides a serene ambiance through spring and summer, and showcases vibrant autumn colors. A cozy fire keeps guests warm during colder months, adding to the charm of this hidden gem.
The Whitehouse is the ultimate destination for those seeking the best burger experience in South Australia, complete with an enchanting outdoor dining area and warm,...

As a man with blood type mustard/ketchup positive, I reckon i know a thing or two about burgers. Today we had possibly the best hamburger I've ever parted cash for! The patty - the fabulous juicy patty with a sear so perfect it could be in a skincare commercial. It had that glorious crust that whispered, “Yeah, I hit the grill like a pro.”
Then came the bacon — smokey, crispy, and clearly raised in the countryside by artisan pigs who listened to jazz. Melted cheese oozed like a rom-com montage, lovingly draped over the patty like a blanket made of dairy dreams. Tomato relish? Sweet, tangy, and possibly illegal in some countries for being too seductive.
And the bun. Oh, the toasted milk bun — golden, fluffy, and just the right level of squish. If clouds were bread, this would be it.
10/10. Would ditch my current relationship for this burger. Being in Hahndorf I have to close out with the words of the immortal Austrian Arnie - "I'll...
Read moreThe restaurant has a very limited menu and none of the, 3 only, entree items appealed. When ordering mains one of the main course items was unavailable - early on a Friday night. We waited an hour for our main courses and when they came 2 of the 4 meals were barely luke warm. We addressed this with the waiter who said he could have the meals re-cooked. As we had waited so long we were not prepared to undergo another long wait so ate what we had been given. When ordering desert from the 3 item selection we were told that one of the items was not available - again, early on a Friday night. This is indicative of very poor mise en place As there was no offer of restitution of any kind for the cold meals we left feeling that we had just paid a lot of money (very expensive) for a very...
