SKYDIVERS TRAVELING AUSTRALIA. BEWARE! I strongly advise against choosing this airport for your travels, especially if you're a skydiver carrying equipment. My recent experience at their security check was incredibly disappointing. When the staff noticed my parachute rig, the security supervisor/manager was called over and the situation escalated unnecessarily. Despite having smoothly passed through various airports across Australia previously, the security manager's handling of the situation was both condescending and patronizing from the start.
Attempting to explain the value and safety reasons for carrying my rig on board proved futile, as the manager refused to acknowledge my Australian Parachute Federation documentation and disregarded the manufacturer's information page designed to assist security personnel’s understanding of the equipment. The lack of understanding and the dismissive attitude left me feeling frustrated and I was hastily redirected to the Jetstar luggage check to see if I was “allowed” to have it as a carry-on.
A subsequent phone call confirmed that checking the parachute was not required but merely "preferred" by the airline. Despite emphasizing the item's value and safety considerations, the manager remained unyielding, displaying a close-minded approach to my legitimate concerns.
Whether due to a lack of knowledge about the sport or a personal bias, the manager's rudeness and reluctance to engage with my documentation left me questioning the fairness of the treatment I received. I cannot determine if I faced discrimination as a skydiver or as a foreigner, but the overall experience was disheartening.
This encounter has left a lasting negative impression, and I would strongly discourage others from choosing this airport, especially if they value respectful and informed interactions with security personnel. Perhaps this manager was having a bad day, but my observation that I wasn't the only passenger receiving an attitude suggests a need for improved professionalism at this airport's...
Read moreHamilton Island Airport (HTI) is a very friendly airport, though small. After all, the airport only handles a handful of flights every day. This airport must be the most scenic airport I've ever been to, the runway is right next to the crystal clear Whitsunday waters. The airport is a very low stress experience. The arrival process is simple: walk straight out the doors and wait 10 minutes for your bags. The departure process is also relatively simple: check in using the small branch building and go through security (2 minutes) and wait. The only problem I have with the airport experience is the fact that all the Hotel-Airport shuttles arrive way to early and you often have to sit there for an hour waiting for your flight. Since this is such a small airport and with such few passengers, the shuttles shouldn't arrive 2 hours before departure. Otherwise, despite its size, HTI airport has a pretty good restaurant and a couple souvenir shops. I would highly recommend flying into Hamilton Island Airport if you are going to Hamilton Island or any surrounding places as most the flights here are constantly on time and it's just such an easy airport to travel through. If you're going to Airlie Beach of something, there is a direct ferry right outside of the airport that runs every couple hours. You can almost guarantee a perfect ferry connection if you are...
Read moreThe staff that work for the hotels are magnificent but the actual airport and staff are despicable. There is one cafe with atrocious and overpriced coffee and basically no menu options, really preying on lack of choices to make a buck. This airport is so small yet the terrible processes make it constantly busy and almost not worth attending Hamilton. We arrive incredibly early every time in anticipation but there is always a luggage belt down - we waited for 40 minutes in line without moving to check in with no information, eventually found out there was a mechanical fault and no check ins where occuring. The staff were all sitting there doing nothing waiting for one machine to be fixed well into our boarding time. The fact that they knew they had so many departures and no manual way to process check ins is bizarre, and to be honest we had already checked in and were just dropping off bags. I pity the families as there are many kids here who are obviously hungry and tired also stuck standing in a line for hours with no sign of reprieve as they could not even give us a ball park of when maintenance would be here to start working on the fault. Airports are already so stressful the lack of communication and ongoing issues mean Hamilton Island Airport really need...
