The Manchester Unity Building in Melbourne is a real showstopper. I wasn't sure what to expect, but as soon as I rounded the corner, I was blown away by this grand, art deco skyscraper. The terracotta tiles shimmered in the sunlight, and the gothic tower added this cool, unexpected touch.
I wandered into the ground floor arcade, and it felt like stepping back in time. The mosaic floors were incredible, all these tiny pieces coming together in these grand patterns. The shopfronts had these beautiful metal detailing, and everything looked so polished and cared for. I could have spent ages just browsing the shops and soaking up the atmosphere.

The upper offices are a mixture of dentists, jewellers and other one or two-person businesses. A very interesting list of tenants. The building itself has been well maintained with pretty much original fittings and decorations. The plaster and metal work on the cornices and ceilings are very impressive, as are the wood and copper panelling throughout. It all has the genuine feel of a bygone era. This is why you should visit. Take the elevators up to a random floor and go for a walk through the foyers and hallways. Peer through the leadlight transom windows.
