Warning - old room and rude staff, do not eat breakfast here as it will cause food poisoning. We had a horrible experience here. We had been to Melbourne 2 times before and we always passed by this hotel. It looked fancy on the outside so we willing to pay more for hotel this time to stay here. But everything was a let down. We specifically asked for a room that is not near fire exit but we got a room right next to fire exit. When we went downstairs to ask for change, the person looked annoyed. I also got laughed at how I stutter when I speak broken English. And when we check the new room, it has certain smell and is also at the same location just higher floor. So we had to settle with the room we got first time. The bedsheet is also dirty. So, we asked for change and went out to sightseeing. Then, when we came back, they didn’t do anything. At night, we spotted the room actually had broken glass on the cabinet door and the toilet also had a picture of naked woman. It is very noisy outside. We tried to ask if we can change the room. It was until almost 1 am that we get to see another room. But it also has the same problem. Dirty bedsheet and pillow cases. This Indian male staff accused us of putting our hair strand on the bedsheet on purpose to make a scene and claiming he has seen it before. But all we did is flip the duvet to see if it is clean. Oh and the hotel charged a bond when we check in - 100 AUD. (We saw the cabinet door is broken and afraid that we have to pay for what we didn’t cause). He also said that it is not much money so why do we worry about the bond if we don’t get it back… We try to talk calmly but he just being negative and unaccommodating. We didn’t want to stay at this hotel at this point. But it’s too late at night. We reduced our 3 night stay to just 1 night. That Indian male staff also said that the hotel will not give us back 2 nights hotel fees in a mean manner. But we eventually got the money back as we book via agency instead of directly with this hotel. Next morning, we can smell the burning smell from Aircon which is old and can hear noises from outside again. We missed the breakfast as we try to leave as early as possible. Before going out, we hear the noise from a woman in the toilet - perhaps a room next to us vomiting. The noise is loud. After reading google reviews, it might have be because of the breakfast buffet that cause food poisoning.

Back when the current version of the Grand Hyatt Melbourne was unveiled, I’m sure it was considered something special. While its dress circle location and imposing structure still impress, today this property is woefully out of date. Technologically, the hotel is a blast from the past, from the direct-dial buttons on the phones that don’t work to the lack of power outlets anywhere useful to guests. Our suite included an imposing desk with no power points nearby and a king-size bed with just one outlet on one side, zero on the other. When I asked for a solution so we could both charge our devices within reach from bed, we were offered a power strip with a 3-foot cord — an accessory of absolutely no use. Aesthetically, the property feels strikingly similar to the hotels and apartments we knew when we lived in Hong Kong — in the early 2000s. Heaps of marble and chrome that would have been described as glitzy — even glamorous — back then. Today they just read as tacky remnants of the copy-cat look of Chinese “luxury” properties of that era. Then there’s the gym. The Grand Hyatt Melbourne includes its own commercial gym that sells memberships to locals. While the size and variety of equipment are indeed impressive for a hotel, like so much else about this property, much of the machinery also appears to be from another era. Most guests who take their fitness seriously have long ago moved on to updated, smarter-designed gym gear. We are big fans of Hyatt hotels and count several Park Hyatt and Grand Hyatt properties as some our favorites around the world — which is why we were gobsmacked at how disappointing we found the Grand Hyatt Melbourne to be. Either Hyatt as hotel operator is asleep at the switch here, or their owner-partner is too tight with the funds to keep the hotel current.

At first I was impressed, but as my stay continued I felt more disappointed. The building itself is beautiful, I love the amenities - gym, pool, sauna, tennis court. The rooms were spacious and the bathroom has gorgeous marble styled flooring with a lot of mirrors. There was a hairdryer, it had a decent power to it as well. Other bathroom amenities include toothbrush/paste, cotton pads and ear cotton buds. The bed was comfortable and large (king/super king), and the temperature of the room was adjustable and comfortable. It was very quiet in the evening. There was a notepad to request anything, and I requested oat milk for the coffee, which was then provided to me promptly in the mini fridge. It’s the small touches like that I appreciated. However, as the days went on I felt that the room was less and less cared for. My hairdryer was not put away, the milk wasn’t changed etc. Also the dust on the lamp was so bad that I drew a sad face in it and no one even noticed! Probably will still be there today. Breakfast looked nice for people without dietary requirements. However, for those who are vegan or have dietary requirements, it’s not great. I mentioned to the staff that I’m vegan so I asked them what I could eat from the breakfast buffet and they directed me to speak with the chef and have a look around… I would have preferred it if they knew what foods had allergy and intolerances rather than telling me to ask the chef. Overall, it was still a nice stay and the gym makes up for all the other shortfalls. I just hope that the 5* title is actually maintained as currently they’re slipping.

Staying at Grand Hyatt Melbourne felt like stepping into a refined sanctuary above the city's buzz… Where every detail is thoughtfully crafted, and every moment feels elevated. The location is absolutely amazing ! Right on iconic Collins Street, in the heart of the city’s luxury, shopping, and cultural district.

My stay in the Grand Suite King was simply stunning : An 80 m² haven with floor-to-ceiling windows offering sweeping city views, a lavish Italian marble bathroom, and exclusive access to the Grand Club Lounge ! A beautifully designed private space on level 31 offering panoramic views across Melbourne.

It’s an exclusive retreat available only to guests booking Suites or Rooms with Club Access, and it's truly the perfect place for quiet downtime. The atmosphere is calm and elegant, and the space is reserved solely for registered guests, maintaining its peaceful charm.

The Grand Club Lounge opens from 6:30AM to 10:00PM Monday to Friday and from 7:00AM on weekends, offering a curated experience throughout the day :

Continental Breakfast : A generous spread with morning pastries, hot food options, fresh fruit, coffee, and tea … All enjoyed with sweeping views over the waking city.

Daily Refreshments : Whether you're working or simply taking a moment to relax, the lounge offers tea, coffee, and light snacks throughout the day (11:00AM to 10:00PM), which I truly appreciated as a peaceful midday escape.

Evening Drinks and Canapés : A beautiful way to wind down ! Watching the sunset while enjoying a glass of wine and a refined selection of canapés, cheese, cold cuts, and antipasti.

On my first morning, I enjoyed the breakfast buffet at Collins Kitchen, where the variety was incredible and the quality truly impressive… From fresh pastries to savoury classics, everything was beautifully presented and delicious.

For my second morning, I opted for in-room dining and chose the Chinese breakfast : steamed dim sum, warm congee, fresh juices, a smoothie, a fruit plate, and a bakery basket. Everything was served with care and arrived perfectly presented ! A luxurious way to start the day.

Evenings began with pre-dinner cocktails at Ru‑Co Bar, tucked down a laneway and buzzing with creative flair. The bartenders’ stories and signature concoctions were a delight, capturing global inspiration in each sip. I also really appreciated being able to relax by the fireplace at the bar.

Dinner at Collins Kitchen was equally unforgettable !!! A tribute to fire, flavour, and local produce. From smoked meats to vibrant vegetables, every dish was beautifully plated. Hands down the best pork I’ve had since arriving in Melbourne ! Perfectly cooked, full of flavour, and unforgettable. The ambience was warm and cozy, enhanced by authentic fireplace seating and attentive, flawless service.

And I have to say … The fitness centre absolutely blew me away. I’ve rarely seen a gym that large and so well-equipped in a Hotel. How crazy is that! It’s ideal for those who like to stay active while travelling, and it definitely exceeded my expectations.

To top it all off, I enjoyed full access to the hotel’s premium amenities : pool, valet parking, digital check-in, Tennis court and many more …

This isn’t just a Hotel … It’s the kind of experience that leaves a lasting imprint, one you carry with you. Perfect for luxury travellers, foodies, and corporate guests alike. I’m leaving with memories that will last far beyond checkout. Highly recommend. Already can’t wait...

Edit 04/10/25 - Unfortunately I have had to reduce my review rating to accurately reflect my experience since leaving. I accidentally left behind my cosmetic bag behind including a brand new bottle of perfume worth nearly $300. Whether I left it on the bathroom counter or in my make up bag I am unsure. And yes, silly me for leaving it behind. However, when I contacted the hotel from the airport to advise them of this once I realised they went through the normal procedure for lost/left behind items. All good up until the point when I completed the forms and request they wrap my perfume bottle in bubble wrap to send it back they advised me no perfume had been located. Despite numerous follow ups including asking to speak to the hotel manager the perfume was deemed to be missing and that was the end of that. Whether it was housekeeping staff that took it or missed it when they cleaned the room and the next guest after us scored a lovely bottle of perfume I can't be sure. Moral of the story, be careful with your possessions here. Nothing other than an apology from the hotel was offered.

Our first stay at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne was nothing short of amazing. Madi on the front desk set the tone from the moment we arrived — professional, warm, and genuinely dedicated to making sure every detail was perfect. His service went above and beyond and left us feeling truly valued.

The hotel itself exceeded our expectations. Our room was spacious, tastefully decorated, spotless, and located on a high floor with incredible views over the city. The location is superb — right in the heart of Melbourne, making it so easy to get around.

The buffet breakfast was outstanding, honestly one of the best I’ve ever had. The selection was incredible, with something for everyone — from fresh fruit and hot dishes through to pastries and barista coffee. For families, the freshly made waffle and pancake station was an absolute highlight and a big hit with the kids!

A wonderful experience all round. Thanks to Madi and the team, we’re already looking forward to our next stay.
