The Dax Centre is an exceptional gallery space with a cause: to help remove the mental health stigma and communicate the amazing creativity from artists with lived experience of mental health issues. With a variety of skillfully curated exhibitions, the Dax creates engaging dialogues between artists and a wide audience. It is a vibrant art space with so much to offer, including educational sessions for schools and creative workshops for all.

Leaving, I felt lighter—like I’d glimpsed something generous and life-affirming. A place that doesn’t just display art, but uplifts, heals, and inspires conversations about mental health. If you’re in Melbourne, it’s a must-see—even in just a brief moment, it stayed with me.

The Dax centre is an entirely unique place where mental health awareness and creativity are displayed and celebrated. Artworks from people with lived experience of mental health distress are curated and presenting in thoughtful ways to educate and inspire viewers. Most importantly there is a wonderful education program that gives tertiary and high school students a tour of the gallery and then the opportunity to listen to a lived experience advocate speak about their journey with mental health struggles and their path to recovery. I wish I had access to this when I was in high school! It is such a vital tool to break down stigma and put a human face to some of these unfortunately-still-taboo issues. We are lucky to have a centre like this...

The Dax Centre conducts programs that utilise the Cunningham Dax Collection. The Dax Centre uses this Collection as the centrepiece of exhibitions and learning programs for students at all levels, as well as for the community at large. The Centre also conducts specially directed projects in order to promote mental wellbeing. Our staff works closely with artists and communities who contribute their work and life stories to the Cunningham Dax Collection. The Centre partners and collaborates with organisations that share a common interest in improving mental health and promoting mental wellbeing by increasing understanding of mental illness and...

A powerful and deeply moving gallery. The Dax Centre isn’t your typical art space – it’s raw, emotional, and beautifully curated. Every piece tells a story of lived experience with mental health, and you can feel the honesty and humanity in the work. The exhibitions are thoughtful and leave you reflecting long after you’ve left. Staff are welcoming and knowledgeable, and the whole space feels safe, inclusive, and respectful. I learned so much about the role of art in healing and advocacy. Highly recommended if you’re looking for something meaningful, especially if you’re interested in mental health or...
