Read moreThe paid tour lasted more than 1.5 hours when in fact it could easily be done in 30 minutes. The reason for the length of time is because it’s done by old veterans ( our guide was 85 years old). It’s sweet in one way but a total waste of time in another way! Personally my family and i were very bored after the first 10 minutes. However if old artillery and rambling tales about WW2 is of interest to you then this tour would be enjoyable. Also the bias towards the white western narrative was evident in our tour guide. It was particularly interesting that my family and i were singled out as ‘foreigners’ despite being told we were from Sydney (Australian citizen for 30 years, children born in Australia) whereas others in the group with very distinct American accents weren’t considered ‘foreigners’. The fort is maintained well. And if not for the unnecessary length of time the tour could be interesting too. But there would be others that argue that the lengthy tour by a very old veteran adds to the flavour of the place...
Read moreExcellent afternoon Did the guided tour with Carl the vice president of the historical society. Carl had served in the Australian Army and had a posting at Fort Scratchley. Carl was excellent, very informative, pleasant and a good sense of humour. The underground tunnel tour is highly recommend, this takes 90 minutes to do. The time goes by fast and you won't be board at all as there is plenty to see and listen to. There are daily firing of one of the fort's guns, see there website for details. The site can be done for free (no underground tunnel tour) with plenty of interpretive signage but we recommend the guided tour. The site has a small, shop for drinks and snacks along with souvenirs. There are toilet facilities and a baby change table. Parking is limited on site however a short walk away on the Newcastle foreshore you can park for $3-4 for 3 hours depending on what day of the week it is. We will return again...
