Read moreThis was our first return visit to this magnificent 100+ year old ocean pool since its major upgrade was completed in December, and wow! Channeling Jorn Utzon via Jeffrey Smart, the sleek minimalist refurbishment of Newcastle Ocean Baths is just stunning, taking full advantage of both the epic scale and wild location of one of the largest NSW ocean pools.
The finishes are high-end, from the smooth monumental concrete to the marine-grade stainless steel handrails, this is casual luxury for the common people, with no entry fee and loads of free parking. There’s even a Brutalist Lifeguard station, the likes of which we’ve never seen before.
Next they’re going to upgrade the change facilities, and if they can deliver that at this standard then this really will be a people’s paradise and well worth the drive. Heck, it is already. And so photogenic!
