HIDEOUS - WILL NEVER GO BACK Had a delightful experience 6 months ago. Thought we'd recreate it, well it didn't happen. Wouldn't let us sit near the heater on a cold night, told we wouldn't get table service there, (should have walked out then) once seated we checked out the menu, thought is was average at best, on par with a club bistro, it was club fare to be honest, certainly not complicated, with a high end restaurant price, these guys will go broke unless they lift there game. For the sake of your business give better service, take a look at your presentation and check on all guests, not just a cursory comment is it all OK and then just walk off, just as you are about to hear how good it is not! We wanted to have a quite night, they put next to us some noisy sailor types, had a chair hit me, this is in a restaurant which has room for hundreds, I ask WHY? The service staff are lazy and sloppy, I am still waiting for me steak knife and we didn't order the Cascade, take a look at the table. If you order sour dough, blah blah bread, you get plain old garlic bread, 4 pieces about 8 mm thick for your $10, it gets better, our guest ordered a prawn entrée with some over generous name, he got 3 prawns the size of 50 cent pieces, covered in cabbage and served with Chorizo slices, WTF!!!!!! That was $18 or $6 per prawn I had the 350g sirloin steak, it was cooked properly to medium standard, but had absolutely no flavour other than the sauce. The most flavourless steak I have had this year, my last club steak was half the price and twice as good. I am very sorry to anyone from Sydney who has to experience this crap, it was hopeless and luckily our guest from Melbourne had experienced better in this town.

Read moreBooked the public hall area for my daughter’s 30th birthday for the afternoon 3 hour time slot. I was allowed to take only one bunch of balloons with 6 balloons, a cake to which I had to pay $45 for cakeage to which I had to then cut the cake myself and serve it, was given plates but no cutlery. We had platters of food for our guests it was coming to the end of our time slot and the staff just started taking the food away without coming and asking if we wanted the left overs in take away containers or just put at the table where most of the guests were sitting. To top it off the balloons were taken away by the staff and were popped. I paid a lot of money for the small amount of balloons I had purchased for my daughter’s 30th. They can be deflated and reused even the weights at the bottom which I currently do. No communication what so ever from the staff that this was happening. I voiced my frustrations to Hannah about the lack of awareness and communication the young staff have in a social setting. I was offered a voucher as compensation several times to which I declined. I wasn’t voicing my frustrations for a freebie I was voicing my frustrations for the staff to do better. Apart from all of that the venue was awesome. The food...
Read moreThis beautiful, historic venue has it all. Overlooking the harbour foreshore, it's spacious beer garden is the perfect place to relax & enjoy drinks with friends, whilst soaking up some afternoon sun.
The picturesque setting with the fountains, & glorious vistas of the foreshore & harbour really make time spent here extra special.
Whether it be a cold beer, cocktail, lunch or dinner, this is definitely one of Newcastle's iconic gems that must be experienced.
As well as the sunny beer garden, (where live music plays during the summer months) as you walk up the steps, a grand verandah greets you with more seating options.
Stepping inside, you'll be blown away further by it's historic, ornate interior. Take time to look around & savour all it's delights.
I had lunch here a year ago & the food was top notch. My most recent visit was a week ago for some afternoon Birthday drinks in the beer garden.
The staff & service here is fantastic, & I couldn't recommend Customs House more for your next...
