It is located on Dunbar Head, on Old South Head Road, Vaucluse in the Municipality of Woollahra local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The lighthouse is situated approximately 2 kilometres (1 mi) south of South Head near the entrance to Sydney Harbour. There has been a navigational aid in this vicinity since 1791 and a lighthouse near the present site since 1818. The current heritage-listed lighthouse was completed in 1883. The lighthouse and associated buildings were designed by James Barnet and built from 1881 to 1883. There is fencing up some kind of maintenance going on

The lighthouse is opened for regular tours - but you’ll need to book your tour via the Australian Government’s ‘Harbour Trust.’ This is Australia’s longest-operating lighthouse. Built in 1883 to replace the original that was built here in 1816. The Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, named the infrastructure in his own honour, Macquarie Lightstation. The light can be seen 33.3kms from shore each night. There’s an informal plaque located near the roadway that acknowledges the workers at the lighthouse: “In memory of the unknown keeper the forgotten lighthouse mechanics the engineer and his wife.”

Beautiful lighthouse, Australia's first. Designed by Francis Greenway, the only forger to be on a nation's currency! Greenway also designed Cadman's Cottage in the Rocks (oldest building in Sydney) and the Barracks, along with others. Lovely building along one of the most beautiful stretches of Sydney coastline. Combine this with the walk to the Gap and along Watsons Bay and Camp Cove. I've rated it a 4 because, well, I wouldn't go very far out of my way to see it. But if you're touring the area, it's worth a look. I've never been by when it's open, so can't speak to that.

My Wife and I walked over from Watson's Bay Wharf to Gap Bluff, then on to see the Macquarie Lighthouse atop the bluff at Dunbar Head. A navigational aid has been in the area since 1791 and close by since 1818. Built between 1816-1818, the first Macquarie Lighthouse opened in November 1818. This lighthouse was built by of sandstone which did not stand up to the elements. The building started crumbling as early as 1823. Authorities put metal bands on the exterior the of lighthouse, but by 1878, it was time to build a new structure. The current Lighthouse was built and first lit in 1883. Though it has since gone through light source changes and been automated since 1976. The last lighthouse staff left in 1989. Beautiful views from atop this rugged coastline bluff.
