I visited STAM on a Tuesday in mid-November with my kids, ages 4 & 6. There were only a handful of other visitors at that time. The museum is really well done - what a long and interesting history Ghent has - with little activities in each gallery for kids. For example, in one gallery there is a little area for them to sell cloth, in another to draw or etch a coat of arms, etc. There is also a Lego room to “build Ghent” and another room with different types of blocks and other building toys to make the city again. We spent about 2 hours here and could have made a whole day out of it. My kids were kept busy and learned quite a few things about the history of Ghent in our visit. Would definitely recommend to folks visiting the city with young kids, but also those without - lots of engaging and interesting things for adults...

STAM - Stadsmuseum Gent is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the history and culture of Ghent. The museum's exhibits are well-curated and provide a comprehensive look at the city's rich past. The interactive displays make the experience engaging and fun for visitors of all ages. The architecture of the building is also impressive and adds to the overall experience.

The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always happy to answer any questions you may have. The museum's collection of artifacts is also impressive, with something for everyone to enjoy. The prices are also reasonable and worth it for the quality of the exhibits and the experience. Overall, STAM - Stadsmuseum Gent is a great place to learn about Ghent's history and culture. Highly...

I love museums, and STAM is great! Housed in a former abbey, you learn a bit about the history of the building as well as the history of the city. If you do not read Dutch, GET THE €3 AUDIOGUIDE! If you do not get the audio guide, you'll miss out on a lot of information. The way the main exhibit is set up has a nice flow, and the artifacts from the middle ages were quite interesting. I went at the end of my trip, so I could appreciate the maps and names of places. Also: they have a small copy of the Mystic Lamb, which was easier to look at than the real one in St. Bavos' cathedral. The outside area is nice, and people were outside studying and taking in the sun. Highly recommended for visitors interested in learning more...

A nice collection tracing chronologically the history of Ghent mostly from the Middle-Age. Goes to modern times, trying to encompass the big stakes for the future. Overall very interesting and comprehensive exhibition in a historical building. Main explanations are given in Dutch, English, French and German. More detailed ones and labels of artefacts are mostly in Dutch only. They have a few interactive screens to dig deeper in some specific topics, multilingual. Audioguide is very useful if you don’t understand Dutch and will definitely give you more insights. The numbers to press on the audioguide are sometimes not easy to find and the way through the rooms can be a little bit confusing. Visit lasts some 2 hours or so.

Really appreciated the reception accepted my press card unlike the RUDE reception at the Museum of Fine Arts. Love that ALL the permanent exhibition placards are translated in English and French. I found Ghent’s history and the numerous artifacts to illustrate that very well-presented. It’s definitely a compact museum, with the modern history given shorter shrift. The medieval refractory is beautiful. The museum wasn’t crowded at all on Saturday at noon. As for the temporary exhibition, it’s unfortunately not translated into English. It’s on skylines. I found that less interesting anyway and ran out of time so wasn’t as big a deal for me.
