It’s been a while since I last visited, but MSK is always an entertaining time. In honour of Gent’s proud Van Eyck collection. In this rare collection of arguably Belgium’s finest artist it’s hard to keep focused on reviewing MSK itself and not its particular show. So, the MSK chose to have specific time slots for their visits. I understand the reasoning although having visited on a particular Sunday time slot, I can attest ‘having a calm visit’ is not among the reasons. The place was packed, seriously packed. At the same time we did get the impression it was all very well arranged by a well trained and numerous team. During the visit we could enjoy a well thought out and fairly efficient exhibition. Obviously the MSK is a highly professional environment. The two things that need some work in my opinion are the exit and the book store. The gift shop was less inspiring, the bar closed very early and it felt as wit we had to exit the museum through some shady side door. All in all, a good visit. Also, go visit the Van Eyck exhibition.

Museum voor Schone Kunsten (MSK) is a fine arts museum located at Citadel Park in Ghent, just across from Stedelijk Museum voor Acktuele Kunst (SMAK). Opening Hours are 10-6pm daily and entry fee is €8 per person. MSK was established in 1897 and has occupied its present building since 1900. The permanent collection focuses on works from the medieval period to the mid 20th century, offering visitors chance to see Flemish masterpieces by Jan Van Eyck, Rogier Van Der Weyden, Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Brueghel II as well as Dutch Golden Age works by Anthony Van Dyke, Pieter Paul Ruebens, Jacob Jordeans amongst other Netherlandish artists. Overall, the Museum of Fine Art in Ghent provides a nice opportunity to see quite a few historic artworks and to see masterpieces by important Old Masters.

Museum voor Schone Kunsten is my top favorite museum in Belgium. My experience here was even better then The Royal Museums of Fine Arts - Brussels museum that is my second favorite museum in Belgium. The building looks recently renovated and the background colors of the walls enhance the whole experience of admiring the masterpieces exposed. The collection includes Old Masters such as Jheronimus Bosch, Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck hang alongside impressionists, surrealists and modernists such as James Ensor, Auguste Rodin, Emile Claus, René Magritte and George Minne. If you enjoy art, a visit to Museum voor Schone Kunsten is a must.

2023: Update: pictures. The oldest museum, pré-dating Belgium. This is a great art museum with an awesome permanent collection (Breughel2, Bosch,aso...) but, at the moment of this writing (2020), they also expose a worldwide reassembeled collection of (10 out of only 20 remaining) genuine Jan Van Eyck paintings and dousaines of related paintings. Also, learn all about the restauration and history of the most famous painting of Van Eyck and his workshop... must visit. Be aware,,... limited number of visitors a day,... all live available info at the entrance of the museum near the Citadel park and the (equally famous) SMAK museum.

Overall very happy with my visit; spent about 1.5 hours there. Not crowded at all on the Sunday, when I arrived about 12:30. Only negative is the HASSLE the reception gave me over my press business card, claiming it was invalid bc it didn’t have my picture and wasn’t laminated in plastic. Get a clue lady, not every press organisation does that. She reluctantly let me in for free as per press conditions. On the plus side, wonderful art collection especially of Gothic art. Everything is translated into English and French. Museum layout is confusing. Photos allowed inside except at the Van Eyck panels under restoration.
