Het Citadelpark werd in 1875 naar ontwerp van H. Van Hulle aangelegd ter hoogte van de tussen 1819 en 1831 gebouwde citadel. Het park in landschappelijke stijl omvat talrijke loofbomen, gras- en bloemperken, brede dreven, vijvers, kunstmatige grotten, watervallen, rozentuinen en een pergola. Enkele gebouwen in het park zijn het Museum voor Schone Kunsten, het Feest- en Floraliapaleis, de ingangspoort van de citadel, het openluchttheater en het dierenasiel.

De ingangspoort van de citadel aan de oostzijde van het park is het enig resterend gedeelte van de citadel (samen met een tot berg- en werkplaats ingericht gedeelte voor de plantsoendienst bij de grot) en dateert van 1826. Het Feest- en Floraliapaleis met casino en velodroom werd gebouwd in 1912-13 in het centrum van het park op de plaats van de in 1898 door de stad gekochte kazerne waarvan enkel de ingangspoort rest.
