The former residence of Laurinda Santos Lobo, a great sponsor of the arts in the 1920s to 1940s and in 1994 transformed in a cultural center open to public. For those who wants to have fun with the family, the place is also perfect, because the Cultural Centre of the park is for free and intense like exposition, theater for kids, performances by circuses and music. Saturdays and Sundays, there are special programming for kids and a great breakfast served by the local coffee shop. The Cultural Centre Parque das Ruínas was the house of a big Maecenas of Belle Époque carioca, Laurinda Santos Lobo. Known as the “marechala da elegância”, Laurinda used to meet intellectuals and artists on the magnificent premises of the palace, that today uis one of the most beautiful winning projects of the architect Ernani Freire and house experimental works of art. I was walking towards the Escadaria Selarón from the Santa Teresa tram station,totally unaware that I was really close to this gem! There's no better way to describe this place, a hidden gem. A mix of a restored historical building with exposed brick structure, combined with a touch of architectural intervention (metal staircases and ramps), and the best feature, an observation tower with one of the most stunning views of Guanabara Bay, Sugar Loaf, Downtown Rio, etc... Words can't describe what you're going to find up there, make sure you bring your camera, phone, anything to capture the amazement of the Rio de Janeiro natural landscape from one of the most beautiful points of view. Parque das Ruínas is one of my favorite spots in Santa Teresa, the artsy, bohemian heart of Rio. The mix of modern structures built into the old, crumbling mansion walls gives the place so much character. Climbing to the top is a must—the panoramic view over Rio is incredible, with clear sights of Pão de Açúcar and Cristo Redentor standing out beautifully.
