I have been meaning to visit this place for awhile and now I finally had the chance to come and leisurely take in each pieces that are display here. Speaking from a perspective of an art appreciator, all the pieces here are stunning, simply unique in their own ways. Now, as an artist myself I would like to compliment the artists for the techniques they've used in their own pieces, I was standing there for awhile trying to dissect this certain piece with my eyes, I wanted to know what went through the artist's mind when he stroke his brush across the canvas, being able to paint the pain that weighed heavily in your chest is an incredible thing, I assumed so. Aside from the art pieces, I have to mention the café too, I enjoyed the desserts and drinks that they have here. I highly recommend this place for those who have eyes for arts and confectionery.
I would love to meet the artists in person, perhaps have a little chat about the painting techniques that were used in...
Read moreI went there to see what was on exhibition, the local host (who was very kind) told me that it was modern art and painting from cambodian artists. As I am not really into modern art I decided to kindly and politely refuse and I left. I could have paid 8$ to enter for free at the café and enjoy the exhibition. But 8$ is way too much for a coffee and exhibition to me, compared to the local prices. The European guy with that french accent laughed at me and was very arrogant, he said :"he expected it to be free, ahah, pfff". (P.s: i'm french so if can easily recognize the bad accent we have in english).
Of course not, i am not stupid! I was ready to pay and participate but not 8 $ for some art which that dont really talk to me...
I am so happy that i did not gave my money to that kind of arrogant people who think that they own everything. Respect is due to both part. I was polite and discreet at every step. This man shouldnt work...
Read moreFinally! An actual contemporary art gallery in Cambodia. Not just one small room (as most here are, and then so many aimed at tourism). There are 3 levels filled with art for arts sake. Art as expression and emotional processing. Art as story.
A lot of the pieces are very dark, but certainly interesting, intriguing, powerful and curious. Different techniques and styles used by the main artists who created the gallery. It’s worth spending a couple of hours to appreciate it.
The ground floor has changing exhibitions. Currently Thang Sothea’s last major exhibition is on show (their most recent is in Phnom Penh at The Gallerist, another great contemporary art gallery in Cambodia but very small). Anyway it’s awesome, super-creative and kinda wild and fun.
I’d love to see works from young/emerging artists. Asian futurism is one of my favourite concepts, for example.
The cafe upstairs is lovely too.
