I recently stumbled upon the New Media Gallery and had the most mind-blowing experience with their current exhibition, PneumoMachinic. I was fortunate to get a private tour from Gordon Duggan, the Founding Executive Director and Curator of the gallery. He personally explained each artwork and the fascinating stories behind them, making the experience truly eye-opening and unlike any other art gallery visit I’ve ever had.
The exhibition itself is a captivating exploration of breath and its cultural significance. The artworks by three different international artists—Ali Miharbi, Cristhian Ávila Cipriani, and Xoán-Xil—are remarkable, using sound and technology to evoke the essence of breath in various forms. From reconstructed human vocal tracts to ancient Peruvian flutes played by live wind data, and intricate wind-instrument automata, each piece was a unique blend of art and science that left me in awe.
I highly recommend visiting the New Media Gallery for anyone interested in innovative and thought-provoking art. I’ll definitely be coming back for future...
Read moreWent to see MirNr (closed Aug 1st 2021) and was impressed by many things beyond the phenomenal exhibit itself. First, the Anvil Center staff are kind, patient with frenzied guests who are worried they're too late (me), and just generally warm. Second, when I got the the New Media Gallery I was greeted by one of the curators who walked me through the exhibit and offered so many details about the context of both the show in that specific space and each piece itself. As an artist who deals with performance more than new media, I was so appreciative of the curators willingness and eagerness to explain what I was experiencing.
I expect this is the case for their other shows.
The nearby all gender washrooms were clean, accessible, and secure. The facility had clear demarcations as to their covid protocols, and overall I just had a lovely time. So worth the...
Read moreThank you to the lovely Jasmine A. who has been talking up New Media Gallery for weeks and then bringing me here to see the exhibit. New Media features contemporary art and the exhibits rotate (sometimes quite literally!) and are here for a short time and then onwards.
We were here in October and got to see "Measure" which is all about the movement of day into night, the cycles of the Sun and moon, the rotation of the Earth and the tools we use to measure time. Sadly, this exhibit ends on December 10 2023. Something new and exciting will follow.
The Earth Spin Orbit piece was pretty clever as the laser follows the Moon around the Earth. The Time Dilation artwork was hypnotizing to watch the rotation. And I watched more than one cycle of Semiconductor as it followed the Sun rising and setting.
Don't miss New Media Gallery. This is a great art...
